Lisbon neighborhoods
 

Hi,
Trying to figure out where to stay in Lisbon. I would like Chiado area but also have heard Barrio Alta and the Alfama. I'm lookin at places between R do Alecrim and Escolas gerais.
We are there New Years eve so being within walking distance to a cool area for fireworks (but we don't have to be in the big celebration) What I mean is in Rome last new years we were in Trastevere and hung out on a bridge but didn't have to walk to the big party. I'm just so confused about the hills and areas, I don't want to have to climb a mountain to get home every day.

This is a bit oversimplified, but everything next to the river is toward the bottom of hills, and everything on the map more toward the middle or the top of the map is uphill. So you look for places closer to river. It also helps to be not to far from a metro/subway stop, and there are trams and funiculars all over Lisbon to get up you up steep hills.

Reading reviews for hotels on booking.com or Tripadvisor will give you a very good idea, street by street, about how lively or quiet or safe or steep the area around a hotel is.

Yes, if you want flat you want the Baixa and points north. That grid of straight streets running north from Praca do Comercio - that's the flat bit. It extends up Avenue da Liberdade but I wouldn't want to get too far up. The Avenida Palace hotel has an ideal location if you want flat and can afford it. Most of Lisbon is hilly, but the Alfama is especially hilly.

Of course, public transport is good and taxis are cheap.

Whether or not the Avenida Palace is an "ideal" location depends on what you personally want to enjoy in Lisbon. It is in too much of an old hotel touristed area for my tastes, and lacks the everyday texture of a lot of the rest of Lisbon, and isn't particularly convenient to the restaurants or sights that I chose when planning a visit to Lisbon. Although I enjoyed visiting the area, it would not pick a hotel there -- but you and others might see it differently depending on your individual agenda.

The OP wanted flat.

I also like flat......there are other( less expensive ) hotels along Avenida ,which is a very nice leafy avenue.

I stay in that area, just off Praca dos Restauradores, but much more cheaply, lol. And it is touristy, but it is also very convenient for transport to other areas, and my favorite (very) cheap restaurant is right there - Bom Jardim.

Know nothing about the hotel, but it's on the flat and near a metro station.

We absolutely loved the Avenida Palace. It's a lovely building, great customer service, not too expensive, amazing breakfast buffet in a chandeliered dining room.

It was our first visit to Lisbon, and the location was perfect for us to walk around. We walked up to the castle, and then cabbed back. Cabs are very cheap there.

Check out Baixa House serviced apartments in the Baixa. I highly recommend. They have a two bedroom. The place is gorgeous and has won design awards but very affordable. I have friends who just came back and absolutely loved it. The nicest people run it and it’s supremely comfortable. They service the apt daily and stock the fridge with yogurt, butter, cheese, juice and milk. There’s an espresso maker and coffee. The best part is the fresh bread left in a linen bag in your doorknob every morning. Check it out!

If you like dark lobbies, where you'll need a flashlight to get around, somewhat of a trend in some hotel groups, then you'll like the Fontecruz Lisboa. That part of Avenida da Liberdade is very walkable.

As far as getting around, taxis are inexpensive and the city has an excellent metro system and bus line.

We have a one bedroom booked but they also have 2 bedrooms. It is in Chiado and has an elevator. I will post about it once we stay there in late April.

Shoot....just got back to this thread and I missed everything!! Thanks for all the replies! I'm going to read them right now!!

So I booked an apartment on Joaco de Deus...South and a tiny bit west of Rosso station. It seemed to be a decent location and got great reviews. It will be very easy to get to Rosso for our day trip to Sintra!

I appreciate all of the comments, we will be there in a month It's VRBO #898107, I'm hoping to write a trip report when we get back!
