Lisbon in one day
 

We will be staying in Lisbon 2 1/2 days before departing on a cruise next month. On our arrival day, a Monday, we will be taking a tour to Sintra since many places in Lisbon are closed on Mondays. We are staying in the Alto Bairro area. We want to see as much as possible on our other full day, Tuesday on our own. Can anyone suggest an itinerary for us?

Tile Museum, Gulbenkian Museum, Monastery / Coach Museum / Discovery Monument (Belem).

Well do not know where you are staying in Alto Bairro and how much walking you can do.
The streets are narrow cobblestoned and sloping in many areas.

There is an elevator ( Elevator de Santa Justa) to take you down to the Lower Town( Bixa).

Some of the main places you can see is

1.The Commercial Plaza ( Square with statue of of King Jose I
2.The Triumphal Arch ( Rua augusta Arch)
After seeing all of the Commercial Square that you want ...then

4. walk through the Arch and all the way down Augusta Street( Rua) to get to Rossio Square with Figueira quare nest to it.


5. St. George ( Jorge) Castle perched up on the hill,great views looking down.
6. Carmo Convent Ruins ( near the Santa Justa Elevator)

7. Liberation avenue is a nice walk all the way to the Monument of Marquis of Pombal ( he rebuilt Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake
8. Monastery of St. Vincent

9.Santa Luzia Lookout Point in the Alfama District

Then you can take the tram to Belem District as there are some great sites here.

Don't know how much you can do in one day walking.

I would echo the above - use a taxi for the Tile museum or you will waste a lot of your day waiting for the bus - but it was my favorite stop in Lisbon. Maybe do Belem with the Jeronimo monestary, discovery monument and coach and maritime museums, then hop over to the tile museum, and if you have energy left finish up in the Alfama (although be aware that most museums close around 5 pm). enjoy!

lauramsgarden is right...use a Taxi, don't waste time traveling from A to B.

The Tile Museum is very nice and a wee bit out of the main centre but it is along the Tagus River and towards the Vasco de Gama Bridge which you cannot miss.

Also Belem District is a great place to go as all the major sites are right here near each other like..

1. The Coach Museum in part of the Belem Palace which is residence to President of Portugal
2. Walk straight ahead from the Coach Museum towards the Tagus River through the lovely gardens of the Belem Palace..

and you come Alfonso du Albuquerque Square with his statue in the centre.

3. To your RIGHT as you face the river is the Vasco de Gama Gardens ...walk through here

4, You will come out to the Gardens of the St. Jerome Monastery.
This place you WANT to see.

There is a church here the Santa Maria Church
An Archeological Museum
A Maritime Museum , which is very nice

But enter the Monastery through the archway by the Santa Maria Church and you will see perhaps the loveliest most ornate carved Cloisters in Europe.

5.Now straight south towards the Tagus River from the Monastery ...walk through the gardens again , keep going straight ahead ( yes cross the major road)

and then you come onto this superb square called Compass Square..look down at your feet , you are walking over a Compass pattern with an Old World Map on it.

Now on Compass Square and by the Tagus River is the
Monument of Discoveries.

It is quite the Monument and along both sides are Navigators who were prominent in Portugal's era of Discovery.

You can go inside the Monument for great views.

Finally to your RIGHT as you face the River look down a couple blocks and you can see the Belem Tower.

Yes! you will want to see and go inside the Tower.

That should be enough ( more than enough) for one day..

You pick where you want to go.

Great suggestions above. The Tile museum was my favorite museum/site in Lisbon, so I agree that it's worth a taxi ride to go see it. taxis are relatively inexpensive.
We also stayed in the Barrio Alta and loved the area.

We went on the hop on, hop off bus in Lisbon last month. I found it an efficient way to see a lot of the city quickly for an overview. There are two routes that take you in different directions. You can then return to those sites that you want to see in more detail.

Another vote for Tile Museum, Gulbenkian Museum and Jeronimos Monastery. Enjoy this lovely city.

What price range for restaurants?

For one day in Lisbon, the transit system offers a 6 euro unlimited 24-hr pass.

With it, you can take the 15E tram to Belém and back, and in the city take a ride on the 28E thru the narrow streets of Alfama for an excellent tour. I believe (but double check) that the Santa Justa elevador and the others are also included, which really makes it a great deal for seeing a lot of the city.

I will be meeting others from our cruise for dinner before we set sail-somewhere casual where we can go after exploring all day. I guess-price medium

Cantiho do Avillez is a moderately priced, casual restaurant that we enjoyed.

Xapuri Bistro was a wonderful little place with innovative tapas - one of the best and actually least expensive meals we had in Portugal
