Lisbon hotel recommendations
 

We are planning a three-night stay in Lisbon in April, and have recommendations for one of four hotels in the area we are visiting: 1. Avenida Palace; 2. Metropole; 3. Hotel Lisboa; 4. Heritage Av. Liberdade. Would appreciate any suggestions or thoughts abut any or all of these hotels. Many thanks.

Avenida Palace plays in a different league. If money is not an issue and they accept reservations, go for it.
It's the classical end of 19th century hotel of Lisbon. Mr Marconi and many crowned heads were their guests. During 2nd WW it was a spies' nest.

We stayed in the Metropole about four years ago.

The hotel is in a great location. The breakfast was very nice.

The room was very large as was the bathroom. The bathroom was all marble.

Our twin bedded room was at the back of the hotel and we had the windows open and the street below was very noisy with garbage pick up in the wee hours.

The room was very neat and clean but I felt, at the time, in need of a little updating. Now. We only paid a walk up price at the time of E65. So many we were given one of the not so fancy rooms. But we liked it very much.

Hi; We stayed at the Avenida Palace. It's a great location. I looked the prices last April and didn't think the price was that high. We ended up not going to Lisbon. But not sure, currently. We happened to have a cornor room, with some view of the old square. People were wonderful. Had a great talk with the 'bartender'. Richard

Dick...in order to help Rolf we should be more specific. As Lobo (our resident maven in Lisbon) says...the Avenida Palace is in a different league from the other hotels the OP is researching. We stayed at the next door VIP Eden and checked the rates at the Avenida Palace just as a matter of curiosity. The lowest rates in spring '08 were €400...checking the web, the rates are still in that vicinity today...equating to about $580 at today's rate of exchange...Now Rolf will have an idea of what "not that high" means. By contrast, Sher, above, stayed at the Metropole for €65 ($95), the difference being enough to pay for five days worth of great Portuguese meals....with good beer and wine.

Hi stu good to hear from you. Doing great. BB going great. Now, If you check the site and go to 46% off, it's 215euro per night. Suggested the Avenida Palace because poster mentoned it. I had checked this earlier for friends that are also going in April. Dick p.s. We need to start the sports triva again.

Sher...you are SO right...we stopped in at the orignal
pasteis shop in Belem (c. 1837)...Roz and I had two each...then waddled away...delicious, addictive, yet so small and very calorie intense. New Portuguese bakery here in L.A., excellent pasteis selection, among other sinful choices.

Dick...I just wanted Rolf to know what his cost options were. Even with the hefty discount, it would be $312. His decision, of course. I just wish that people let us know what their limits are so we can more efficiently recommend or not.

Sports trivia? Yeah! I just participated in a go-around for a guy going to Boston for the Laker-celt game end of this month...fun reading.

No matter where we are in Portugal we don't do anything before we have a pastry: EVERY DAY.

Must be the air there as I don't gain weight. Or maybe in Lisbon it is the hills.
