Lisbon Hotel Location
 

My friend and I are headed to Lisbon next week and need to book a hotel. We would like to pay less than $200 a night but want to be in a safe area and an area that we would be able to walk to restaurants, cafes and shopping. Any suggestions?

how long are you going for? did you look on waytostay for apartments?
better if you're on a budget than a hotel.

We are going to be in Lisbon for 2 nights. We would rather stay in hotel if possible. Where is the Sheraton in relation to where we would want to go for dinner, go out, shop, etc? Or Albergaria Senhora Monte or Vincci Baixa?

Sheraton has a decent location, but not exciting.
Try one of these:
Hotel Borges - low cost
Hotel Chiado Regency - medium cost
Hotel Avenida Palace - high cost (dificult to rent)

Hotel Avenida Palace - high cost (dificult to book)
Hotel do Bairro Alto - high cost, however the site has nice pictures of surrounding area.
If you stay in any of the suggested hotels, you may easily walk to any of the main attractions.
Unless you are looking for something upscale, I think the Borges is great (83 euros/2 persons), tram way #28 stop and underground station just off the door.

We liked the Dom Carlos Park very much. In 2005, it was about 110 Euro.

I always recommend the Hotel Mundial. It is a short walk from Rossio Station and the shopping of Baixa. You can see the Castelo Sao Jorge from many of the rooms.

We stayed in the Senhora Monte yearsss ago. (Cost was $37 a nite then.) It was up a steep hill but with a wonderful view and near the castle. I don't recall any difficulty getting to the main sights in Lisbon. I wonder what the hotel is like now... it was rather spartan then.

We stayed at a pension, Persao Residencial Geres www.pensaogeres.com in 2005, just off the main square, Rossio. If you don't mind climbing a set of stairs the room was a good size, clean and attractive. There is a choice of rooms with or without private bath. With the money you save, and if you have time, go to the tourist office and ask if they still have the brochure for the company that gives motorcycle tours. They come with a side car and driver and we spent one wonderful Sunday going all around the coast of Lisbon, Sintra etc. and our guide was wonderful. We stopped often for expresso and Portuguese pastries and lunch. He then dropped us off in the early evening at his favourite restaurant and we walked back to the pension with our bellies full and wonderful memories.It was a full day and as well was a great way to meet a 'local'

This past spring we settled on an under $200 hotel, a former art deco 1930's theater, now the VIP Eden.
Clean, neat, friendly staff, dramatic rooftop pool, with great city and castle views. Breakfast is not included...their unappealing buffet was overpriced at 1.56-1...as a good option, next door is the nice little Taverna Olympic with outdoor seating and very reasonable, tasty full menu breakfasts.

Half a block from the hotel is the picturesque "Elevador da Gloria", a tram that whisks you up in less than a minute to Bairro Alto for night life, fado and restos.

The hotel is on Praca Restauradores, and close to Rossio. Also short walk to the "eating lane"(Portas de San Antao), with a multitude of choices. And walking distance to Rua Augusta, the Baixa pedestrian shopping street.

Hi I advise you the location of Parque das Nações. It is the newest area of Lisbon with great views of the bridge, river, shopping center and with subway. It is your best bet. If you want I can give you more info. Avoid Baixa (dowtown). I live in Lisbon and my email is

Hotel do Bairro Alto is very nice, good area for nightlife, restaurants, shopping. It is pricier but the service is great and they have a roof bar. You might be able to get a last minute deal on their website.
