Lisbon at Christmas
 

I have lots of miles and hotel points and want to go somewhere I've not been before.
Input please - is Lisbon recommended for a single female traveler? I'm planning a Christmas trip.

I go to Lisbon for two weeks every year on business, and I am frequently spouse-less. I am a 59 year old woman and typically stay at the Marriott, which is a ten minute walk to the metro and then a metro ride away from anywhere central.

I have never felt uneasy walking home alone at dark, nor have I felt threatened in any central part of Lisbon alone at night. There are of course many places in Lisbon where I wouldn't walk alone at night -- I just posted a note about my walk from the Cathedral out to the Parque das Nacoes. That 5 miles walk, perfectly fine during the day, is not one I would try at night. It's just about common sense.

During the day, your main threat is as a target for pickpocketing or purse-snatching. This is nowhere near the problem it is in Spain, for instance, but it does happen, so protect yourself.

Lisbon is generally a very safe, friendly place. I think you would enjoy it and feel very comfortaable as a single female traveler. Laurie

kayhull -- If you are going to be at the Marriott, you will find a real shortage of restaurants nearby. So I'd recommend doing most of your eating before returning to the hotel.

Two exceptions to that --

Adega das Laranjeiras which is about five minutes on foto and has good traditional Portuguese food (though they have been known to put different prices on their English and Portuguese language menus)

Erva do Cheiro, a bit further away, about 15 minutes through some pretty character-less high rise development, but a more upscale, interesting menu. I like this place a lot.

I am a 62yr old single female and travelling to Lisbon alone this year for Christmas.
Can you tell me how you found your time in Lisbon alone last Christmas. I have booked a lovely apartment in Alfama but hope to get some shopping to last me over the Christmas period. I am there from 23 Dec to 28th Dec and think the whole of the time will be Christmas closure. I hoped to eat a nice meal on Christmas Eve but am not too bothered if I get some provisions first.
Hope to hear of your experience of last year.
Are you going away alone this year again.
