Lisbon Apartment help
Hi Fodorites,
On a whim, I bought tickets for myself and my son (age 6) to visit Lisbon for one week in Feb 2019. Disclamier, I haven't done much research about it yet besides reading several Lisbon trip reports here and online travel guides. First thing however, is for me to book an apartment for us for the week. I have looked at Airbnb and found several apartments that I like and serve our needs and budget. Although my son is only 6, he is a good walker, even with hills. Most important for us is a place that is convenient to public transit (metro, tram, bus), safe and quiet. Currently I think we will spend one day to visit Belem and one day to Sintra, but basing ourselves in Lisbon the entire time (5 nights). All but one of the apartments I found are in the Alfama district. the ohter one is Bairro Alto. Let me know what you think and why. Thanks in advance. Bairro Alto https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/27417147 Alfama https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3198962 https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/8776406 https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1900295 |
None look awful but I'd go with the Bairro Alto as first choice, then the blue place
|
Should I look for apartments in the Chiado neighborhood? I looked yesterday and didn't find much but today I'm seeing a lot more options in the Chiado area.
|
I prefer Barrio Alto to the Alfama district. Chiado is right next to Barrio Alto -- You have said you want to be near public transportation so I'd choose based on that.
|
I would not stay in the Alfama area, too hilly, and the tram is overcrowded.
I prefer to stay close to Praca dos Restaurodores, but I stay in a (cheap) hotel/pension. (Nice to see you are traveling, yk, I haven't seen you here lately, maybe not looking in the right place.) |
Thanks again for all your input.
Here are a few other ones. The Bairro Alto apartment is still high on my list - it looks nice and it has very good reviews https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/27417147 And these other ones in Chiado https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/14785630 https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/5995787 https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/11002241 I'm still leaning towards the first one but am interested in hear what are your thoughts on the others (as in their location) (Hi thursdaysd, you are so sweet to remember me. yes I haven't traveled much for the past 6 years, at least not to Europe. But now that my kid is 6, I feel I can take him with me without dragging tons of baby stuff/strollers/diapers etc, you know. We did go to the UK last summer but I don't have the time to post TRs anymore.) |
yk - I also still rank the Bairro Alto place tops, but the last of the new three looks promising.
How's your brother doing? Is he still in HK? |
Yk - how exciting that you are introducing your son to Europe! Lisbon is one of my facorite cities - I have an old TR on it, but have been back more than once.
|
Have you gotten cross streets for the apts? I don't think the big circle that Air BnB uses is particularly helpful. I like old areas with twisty streets and thus prefer Barrio Alta.

i ended up booking the Bairro Alto place.
