Lire or Euro in Italy

I have some leftover lire from a trip a few years ago. Do they still use this or has Italy converted to the Euro? If they have converted, will the banks still accept lire?

Thanks!

The "Bank of Italy" (Banco d'Italia?) will take lire notes until February 2012 - - see http://europa.eu.int/comm/economy_fi...urrency_en.htm

Best wishes,

Rex

If that doesn't work for you, you may be left with some interesting and colorful scrapbook filler!

Italy has joined the rest of the European Union with the Euro. I hope you don't have too much money tied up in your souvenir money from the good old days in Italy.

Oh how I remember those good old days of the Lira.
L1200 for 1 cappucino
L1100 for 1 cornetto
The breakfast special (standing up) at the Snack Bar Valentini, on via S. Martino d. Battaglia.
I have the receipt from 1991. That was $1.53 back then.

During my first trip to France in 2002, I was a bit disappointed because I wasn't able to spend French francs after hearing about them my whole life.. had to be satisfied with euros. Mind you, this was probably to my advantage, because being familiar with the U.S. dollar, it made making decisions about costs a lot easier. If someone had said something cost 350 FF, I would not have a good idea how much that was and would have to convert.
