Linz
 

I will be visiting Linz in mid October and I will have 2 free days to do some local site seeing, can anyone please help with some info on the high lights of Linz and the surrounding area?

We are thinking of spending some time in Linz also on a future trip to Germany/Austria/Czech and visited their website at:

We requested their tourist brochures and received a large envelope filled with all kinds of goodies.

I don't know what your interests are but the Postlingberg Railway sounds interesting as well as a stroll through the Old Quarter. They have a Botanical Garden that looks lovely. I'm not into modern art (that much), but we might visit the Museum of Modern Art just for the interesting architecture of the building. And the Martinskirche, which dates from 799, looks like it's worth visiting. If you're into modern technology, the Ars Electronica Center (Museum of the Future) sounds very interesting. If you're into gambling, they also have a casino. According to their events calendar, there is an Autumn Fair held from 2 October thru 10 October.

There is also a concentration camp not far from Linz, but I can't remember the name of it, although I read about it here on Fodors. You can do a "search this forum" for concentrations camps if that would be something of interest for you. Of course, there is always a day trip to Salzburg and the lake district.

The city of Enns has a great old city center, complete with an old belltower in the square which you can climb to the top of for a great view. The village of Grein is very picturesque also. You might want to journey to Aschach an der Donau and enjoy a meal there at the Faust Schloessel overlooking the Danube and village.

artstuff: The camp is near the city of Mathausen and has the same name. Linz is okay but if you are into good strolls and art, Linz can never measure up to Vienna.

Its true Linz is generally no match for Vienna, but I prefer Linzertorte to Sachertorte.
I like to sometimes stop in Linz for the night when travelling by train from Frankfurt or Munich enroute to Wien.
Linz is a pleasant little city for strolling, eating good no-nonsense Austrian food, then hopping on the trams just to do it. There is nothing really spectacular to see and thats just the point. Enjoy the city as a whole.

I agree with you on Linzertorte. We biked into Linz on a rainy, chilly May day and stopped at Cafe Glockenspeil for the famed torte and a Fiaker coffee to warm us...quite restoring! I must say every city in Austria is worth a visit!
