Lindau Recommendations
 

We are driving from Munich to France and plant to stop in Lindau overnight. Does anyone have any hotel and/or restaurant recommendations?

Sorry not to be able to help but I just NEEDED to say how much I like Lindau! I had lunch in 2 different restaurants along the main road and they're both excellent (sorry I can't remember the names but one is a huge huge gasthof with a gallery towards the road, just opposite the road when you arrive to the main road from the bridge). You'll find a internet cafe in one of the bars inside the shopping centre by the big roundabout near Lindau Insel (the centre of Lindau on the island).
Sorry no clue about accommodation as I travelled by motorcaravan.

I do recommend you visit the zepplin museum in nearby Frederickshafen if you have time. It is a really interesting museum.

Also, there is an excellent puppet theater in Lindau, the Marionnetten Theater. They do operas with puppets. I saw "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Fleidermaus". If you have not seen a German or Austrian puppet production like this, you will be astounded. You go and the back and see the set up afterwards. While it is all in German (no English surtitles), that did not prevent me from enjoying the operas. I didn't always know what was going on, but, heck, it was still fascinating. Check and see if they are perferming while you are there, and do not miss it if they are. In summer I do not know if you need book ahead. In September, it wasn't a problem to just walk up to the box office and buy a ticket.

There are also boats that go out on the lake. You can take a tourist boat or even take a ferry across to Konstanz that also transports your car. In Konstanz, there is biergarten with entertainment. It has been a long time since I've been. I think the whole business occurs every summer during the summer.

For dinner in Lindau, just walk through the old city and pick some place. I ate at a nice place when I was there in September 2004, but, I'm sorry, I can't remember the name.

By the way, I would spend sometime in the Lake Constance (the Germans call it the Bodensee, so look for that on the signs, not "Lake Constance"), and not just rush through making time to France.

If you have time, you can also stop at the Rhinefalls near Schaffhausen.

We were just in Lindau in June....a terrific little island.
We stayed at the Lindauer Hof Hotel...a very nice room with a view.
Had a nice lunch at the hotel.

I have to look at our notes re: restaurants...one was terrific & one was a disaster....I'll post in a little bit with the info.

I had planned on stopping in Lindau several years ago but was intimidated by what seemed like a lot of traffic.

Instead I went to Meersburg, which is nearby. We stayed in a charming and inexpensive hotel--Gasthof zum Bären--and had a room with an oriel window. Meersburg is lovely.

2 years ago, I have stayed at the Montfort Schloessle on the main land and enjoyed it very much. The restaurant to avoid is called the Mediterraneo on Ludwig Strasse.
For a great meal go to Zur Fischerin-Galerie & Weinstube it is located at Ludwig Strasse 50.
Ludwig Strasse is located behind the Lindauer-hof Hotel.
You'll love the island of Lindau....take a walk around the entire island, it takes less than an hour.

Paid parking for the old city of Lindau is just to the right of the main gate that you see when you drive up. You park your car and walk in.

Sue...You may reserve a parking place when you book a room at Lindauer Hof..I think we paid 9 euro a night. It was worth the money having the car just around the corner!

I home exchanged in Scheidigg, Germany, when I went to Lindau last September and simply just paid to park in the lot when I went. Thanks for posting the information. The old city only allows residents' cars in the central part, so you do have to use the lot.
