Linate airport to Varenna

What do you recommend for transporation from Linate airport to Varenna? Arrive in Milan at 2 pm staying in Vareena for 3 nights then on to Zermatt. Id love to hear what you recommend. 2 travelers, like to get to varenna asap but if a car is not recommended id rather not have one. Also is the train to zermatt a pain or is car better? IF by train how can i get tix??
Thanks.

Take a taxi from the Linate Airport to Milano Centrale train station. Then take a train to Varenna-Esino. Note the spelling and full names of the train stations.

To get to Zermatt from Varenna, you'd have to return to Milano Centrale before heading to Zermatt. There may be additional connections after Milan depending on the departure you select. You can buy tickets now for Milan-Zermatt or wait to buy after you arrive, but there may be discounts available now on the Milan-Zermatt portion.

Depending on the time of year, it would probably be faster to drive from Varenna to Zermatt, but there are additional issues to consider. Unless you'd be returning the car in Italy after Zermatt, the drop fee could be very expensive. I'm pretty sure you'd have to buy Swiss roadway tax 'vignettes.'

And Zermatt is car-free, so you'd park/leave the car short of your final destination.

Where are you going after Zermatt?

Seven destinations in 21 days? Hold on to your hat! You're going to be moving fast... and often!

Have you searched all of the train timetables to see how much time it takes to travel between these destinations? At a minimum, you'll lose half a day moving between some cities, but other journeys will eat up the useful part of an entire day.

We have just returned from Italy, and loved our days at Lake Como. The train from Milano Centrale to Varenna: we used the regional train and landed in the only part of the train without aircon on a very hot day. Only later did we realize that the rest of the train was nice and cool! The journey itself was great - try to get seats on the left side of the train for some lovely views. Make sure that you know from which platform the train leaves - you will not find 'Varenna-Esino' on the overhead boards. Do not use the toilet at Varenna Station - 3 weeks ago it was really really dirty
I want to concur with Jean above - it takes more time (and energy) to move from one place to the next than you image. Rather spend an extra day at the lakes, take the ferry to Menaggio (15 minutes) and drink a campari in front of Hotel du Lac while the sun glitters just so on the water!

The train to Zermatt is a pain as it involves multiple changes. Going by car would be even a bigger pain as it would involve a ferry, one or more mountain passes, magnificent landscapes but very tiring roads, and you cannot even reach Zermatt by car.
