Limoncello
For those who know their stuff, which is your favourite brand of Limoncello? I am going to have to buy this after security in Fiumcino.
I bought a bottle of "Pallini" last time but there must be better. I realise everyone's taste is different but I suspect there are certain brands which are favoured for a reason. With thanks |
Casoni Limoncello and Limoncello di Capri are my top 2...
Best quality control makes for best taste usually. Best homemade around Sorrento at the Sorgento farm. |
I don't want to be discouraging, but limoncello is always going to taste better on a hot Rome night than wherever you happen to live.

Granted Tarquin- as with many things you taste on holiday.
As it happens I disliked Limoncello for years but was converted on a terribly wet night last September in Peschici when the wind drove everyone indoors and brought a big tree branch down in the main street very narrowly missing the stallholders .I used to pass on the Limoncello but we had been recommended this restaurant(Da Peppino's) by the 12 year old friend of the daughter of our B&B. Consequently I was afraid of offending her family when the bottle arrived. It was almost certainly home-made and as soon as I can get my hands on lemons I will be making my own. Still until then -which would you recommend? Co-incidentally since I first posted I read in today's Times of a recommended restaurant in Edinburgh which features "Pallini Limoncello"! maybe it is just me! |
We are in Tuscany and Ristoro di Lamole in Chianti makes a great Limoncello.

Frances: I hate to say this but in my limited experience, the brands sold at the airports are not the best of the best. Villa Massa is often on the shelves, for example.
But now that you mention Peschici, I must tell you that if you have time, I would really love to hear about your experiences there....where did you stay, etc etc. (Hoping for a return to Puglia this year..) Many thanks and good luck on the limoncello hunt!! |
Valle dei Mulini is made from Amalfi lemons in Amalfi. It's not available everywhere in Rome, and I don't know if it's available at Fiumicino.
It's not sickly sweet; it's not bright yellow; it's not industrially made. |
