Limited Time in Edinburgh/St. Andrews
Hi all! I am bringing my father to St. Andrews for a short golf trip in April. Here is a brief description of what we are doing. My father has not traveled much and this is his first trip overseas from the US- I know it is a very short time to try to do much. Any thoughts you might have, I would appreciate.
Sunday afternoon: arrive in Edinburgh and travel to St. Andrews
Monday: open
Tuesday: Jubilee Course (11:30 tee-time)
Wednesday: Old Course (12:30 tee-time)
Thursday: fly out
We really have nothing planned for Monday. I was thinking about renting a car and driving around Fife and the fishing villages. OR I thought about spending Sunday night in Edinburgh and exploring there before going to St. Andrews on Monday evening. If I decide to do the drive around Fife, does anyone have a driving itinerary that would be helpful?
Which of those options do you all recommend? Am I missing an option? Thanks for your input!

Let's see if I can be of assistance. First of all, congratulations on making a trip like this with your father--treasure it! I took my dad to Scotland on a golfing holiday in 1983 (he says the best trip of his life).
Here are some recommendations based on 10+ trips to Scotland.
Stay Sunday night in Edinburgh and see as much of that great city as you can. The Royal Mile, the castle, the art gallery if you are interested, pop into several pubs and enjoy the people and atmosphere.
Continue Edinburgh tour on Monday morning, if you wish. Then pick up rental car and drive north across the Forth Road Bridge. Turn off the M90 quickly onto the "Coastal Tourist Route" (I think that is the term). Wind your way around the Firth of Forth, passing through several coastal villages--paying special attention and time to Pittenweem, Anstruther, and Crail. Investigate their tiny harbors and waterfronts. Continue on to St. Andrews.
Stay Monday and Tuesday nights in St. Andrews. The Scores Hotel is a good choice, only 200 yards from the first tee on the Old Course. Wander around the "Auld Grey Toon" on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. See the castle and cathedral ruins. Look for the barber shop with the sign, "FREE WHISKEY WITH EVERY HAIRCUT" in the window. Again pop into several pubs and enjoy the people and conversations. The Pilmour and the Dunvegan are "can't miss".
Conquer the Jubilee on Tuesday (most locals say that it is the toughest test of the St. Andrews courses. Be sure to see the Golf Museum located just behind the R & A building.
On Wednedsday, enjoy the greatest thrill in golf--tee off on the hallowed ground of the Old. Take a veteran caddie who can make your round a memorable and rewarding experience. Ask for Dave Lindsay (better yet, call him when you arrive at 01334 472280) or Denny Michell. These guys know every blade of grass on the Old. Be sure to take your picture crossing the Swilkan Bridge on 18.
Head back to Edinburgh after your Old Course experince. You can see different countryside by taking the A91 to the M90 and on south to Edinburgh.

Ditto to everything _jinx_ says. That simple itinerary will give you the most bang for the buck (or £
w/o too much rushing about.
Are you flying in long haul? If so I'd definitely spend Sunday night in Edinburgh to to get over the jet lag and relax Car-less.
Then after lunch on Monday pick up you car and follow jinx's route along the coast road through the fishing villages. Maybe have dinner in Anstruther or Crail and then the short drive into St Andrews.

OK - more FYI -- searching usually won't work since threads must be indexed before they will show up on a search. And Fodors takes <u>forever</u> to index.
The best way to find all of your threads is to simply click on your name - they will all display in the window to the left. Sometimes you need to click on your name twice (or refresh) to have the latest ones show.
