Like sand through the hourglass...
This may be a stupid question but, I was hoping to bring home a little sand from Omaha Beach, maybe in a 35mm film tube. Is this okay? Will it look suspicious through an x-ray in my luggage? Like my drill sergeant told me, "There's no such thing as stupid questions, just stupid people that ask questions"!

Hi thom,
You might be asked about it. I would keep it in my carryon for easy access. |
Either in the carry-on or even easier, empty it into one of your trouser pockets...that'll get it easily through security at any airport.
|
That is a very charming thing to do, I'm impressed someone here can have so much soul.
I'd carry it in my pocket - won't set the detector off - make sure you don't have any metal objects on you, but I'm sure security can tell sand from anything else sand-like! |
I took a group of 40 5th and 6th graders to Normandy last year and they all wanted to take home sand for their grandparents. We put the sand in an empty film container and had no problem taking it back home.

I don't see a problem with it. In fact, I recall a thread about a year ago (?) in which I was surprised to learn how many folks like myself, bring back rocks from wherever they visit.

I brought sand back from Omaha Beach a couple years ago. I just put it in a ziplock bag. I probably put it in my checked bags coming back, but can't remember for sure....

Thanks all!
I have a neighbor who is a D-Day veteran and I'm going to surprise him with it. I would like some for myself too though! |
