Lido
Has anyone been to Lido? If so, any recomendations on where to stay?
|
I have often been to the Lido. Is there a reason you want to stay there instead of in Venice? The Lido is very different from Venice. If you are going in summer and want to go to the beach with children, it might be worth it, but otherwise you will be about 20-39 minues from Venice.
We prefer to stay in Venice but these are some comments on hotels I have in my files: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hotel Le Boulevard, Gran Viale 41, Phone 39-41-52-61-990, on the Lido. It was clean, modern bathrooms, close to vaporettos, and reasonable. I don't particularly like staying on the Lido, but this is a good bet if you want to stay there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ the two hotels on the lido Hotel Des Bain and the Excelsior both have large pools... the Excelsior is much nicer then the Des Bain... Rooms are larger... both are now Starwood Hotels formerly Sheraton Luxury Collection and have 800 numbers to book.. I have stayed several times in both and booked myself through 800 numbers from the states.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is another hotel called Quattro Fontane that someone liked but I do not have any comments saved. Venice is the first stop for our honeymoon so thought it would be a nice place to relax--do you feel differently?

The Lido isn;t particularly relaxing - it's more like boring. There are a couple of very expensive hotels with private beaches and some not very pleasant public beaches. The water is nothing to write home about.
Everything you will want to see is in Venice proper - and the trip back and forth can be fairly brief - or can take forever. (The convention center is on the Lido and if there is a big meeting on you may wait 30 to 45 minutes even to get on the boat to San Marco.) IMHO wasting a lot of time that you could be seeing and doing what really matters - the heart of historic Venice. |
Last time in Venice (we've been there many times) we stayed at a charming little hotel in Lido called Villa Stella and really enjoyed it as well as the vaperreto rides to and from Venice, but I wouldn't recommend it if this is your first time to Venice. But it was a nice switch for us, lovely room with a large terrace, wonderful breakfast, and very gracious host and hostess. I believe they have a website.
