Maybe they're wary of the "foreign" food?

Take them for a walk up Cheviot to work up an appetite!

I have one friend I travel with who is happy to eat breakfast and then gets by on a couple of mouthfuls of fresh air until dinner time.

Last time we travelled together was to NYC and there was no way I was going to starve, neither were the other two girls. At about midday one of us would just announce we were starving and where was lunch going to be. J went along with us quite happily but left to her own devices she wouldn't have eaten again until dinner time.

We are travelling again in a few weeks - 10 days in Scotland. It won't be a problem this time as our husbands are coming too so three meals a day will be assumed. Not necessarily huge meals, a sandwich most days for lunch, but that's fine.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, I remember being in Paris with a friend. We had hotel breakfast @9 and set out for the day. @11, she announced she was ready for lunch. There were a dozen things I would have preferred doing or seeing, but I had coffee to keep her company.

We (spouse & self) now usually do have breakfast, beverage breaks and then dinner.
I think it could be a "drag/hell on wheels/nightmare" to travel with someone always looking for the next meal.

The above isn't to criticize, just to say there are always different views!

My mother, on occasion, would tell me that I would "try the patience of a saint." While not wishing to confer sainthood on jj, this comment immediately came to mind.

Consider the possibility that your companions are too excited to eat. You've been in London how many times? and for them it's all new and thrilling/

Take it as a great compliment.

Nah that ain't it - believe me

But a MUCH bigger issue just popped up. Single travel from here on out for absotively certain . . .

We pull in to our country B&B (we are getting the whole house because there were going to be 4 of us). Rooms: 4 poster ensuite tub/shower over; large double ensuite shower; huge twin room ensuite tub/shower. I had my eye on the four poster from day one but didn't 'claim' it ahead of time since one never knows view/etc.

The landlady/landlord are showing us around (really beautiful place) and Bette says the twin is fine, barb says the double is fine since she only takes showers. So great - the four poster is mine!! Yeah! Oops - not so fast. I go down stairs to tell Nicho which bags go in which rooms . . . And when he gets to the top of the stairs and is taking my bag to 'my' room Bette tells him to put mine in the twin and hers in the four poster because and I quote . . . "it has the largest bathroom" . . . I kid you not.

Glad to see you back on - it has been a little 'calmer' on fodors for a while. You know who and you know who have toned things down a bit recently.

Now (as I sit here in my twin room) I just have to calm myself down. We got into it a bit but it has sort of blown over. She actually said - if you wanted that room so bad, you should have said so before we left the states. Didn't offer it back to me though. . .

An excellent example of someone who never thinks of anyone but themselves. Rude and self-centered hardly describe such behavior. At this point, I would have simply said, 'Sorry, I've already claimed it' and sweetly added a 'Hope you don't mind.'

tough break, count to 10 and then again. Still the weather is lovely, barely a cloud in the sky (well over in West Yorkshire it is) and it should be again tomorrow. Have a great day, stop to see the bluebells and relax.

This is sounding more and more like the beginning of a Miss Marple: "Poison at the B&B".

jj - you've gone and done it now and named the culprit - named and shamed in fact.

quite right too.

Well, you certainly know by now that there is absolutely nothing you can do to please your fellow travelers. So, do your best to please yourself. Isn't that an old Ricky Nelson song? Dating myself. I'd buy you a drink ( or two if I was there.

Janisj, glad that Bilbo mentioned that the weather is fine. Enjoy because everything else will probably go downhill, sad to say.

I am so lucky to have a group of friends that are fun to travel with. We eat, drink and have a great time. Not that it is perfect. One friend we give five min to make up her mind or I just tell her we are splitting this and this and she is ok. She can't make up her mind. We give her ten min in some stores also. We tease her about it so it is ok. We all have our strong points when we travel so balance it out and it is not a huge pain for one. I know when we had the four bedroom apartment in Florence I took the least desirable room. I just wanted a twin bed and didn't care as long as I didn't have to share a bed.

I think you have had to zip your mouth so tightly that you don't speak up when you should, eg the four-poster bedroom. They probably do not have a clue that you are not signing from the same hymn sheet.

My travel is so focused around food and drink that I even have a list of special Campari spritz places to try later this month in Venice, not to mention restaurants.

tarquin, I do the same. I am on vacation which means I am off my diet and I would be trying all things British. I think that is very bad that they didn't let her have first pick of rooms. Some people can be very selfish. I know one girl that I won't go out to eat with anymore. She has to have four slice of lime in her water, four, not three. That is just the beginning of her requests during the meal.

Yes, hope the English weather has been treating you better than your traveling companions.
