LHR to Victoria by Tube - Best Place to Transfer

Hi all...

We're taking the tube from LHR to Victoria. The TFL site has the transfer from Piccadilly to District at Hammersmith.

However, looking at the map, transferring at South Kensington seems more time-efficient in that the Piccadilly line skips some stops between Hammersmith and South Kensington that the District line stops at.

Is there something about the transfer at South Kensington that I should know -- a very long and stair-filled transfer, for instance -- that does not occur at Hammersmith?

NOTE: On our last visit we went all the way to Green Park for the transfer (to Victoria line) because there was a lot of work going on on the District & Circle lines that we were warned about. Hopefully that will not be a problem. [It was during the run-up to the Olympics.]

Thanks.
Steve

Definitely transfer at Hammersmith. No question. The easiest transfer possible.

You simply exit the train, walk about 20 feet across the platform and jump on the next east bound District line train. You do NOT want to transfer anywhere else.

(What looks easiest/most direct on the tube map ain't always the case)

I was advised by a poster here to change at Hammersmith and it was a brilliant suggestion.

The train doors open, you walk 15 feet to the adjacent track and you get your next train -- whose doors happened to be standing open, in our case.

The transfer at South Kens requires coming up from the depths of the Piccadilly line route (the morlocks are relatively sedate) to the semi-surface dwelling platform of the District/Circle line.

At Hammersmith, you walk across the platform.

And look closer at that map - the Piccadilly doesn't skip "some stops" between Hammersmith and South Kens, it skips ONE stop. For that, you're wanting to shlep your stuff up from the earth's core?

Well you could transfer at Barons Court also...it's the next stop after Hammersmith and the same kind of transfer. After Barons Court, which is not shown on the map, the Piccadilly line tracks descend into a deep deep tube and any other transfer will involve a combination of steps, escalators and/or lifts and the like.

Thanks, all...as always, Fodorites come through.

(I figured TFL had the right advice, but I had to be sure. :-) )
