Let's try again: Fishing in Switzerland
Having been corrected by a plethora of "mother fodors", I've rephrased my "thread".
My wife & I are plannig a trip to Lake Lucerne, Switz. and would like to fish some of the time. We need info on licenses, permits, kind of fish in the lake, etc. I received some phone #'s from some of you, (thanks a bunch), just wondering if there was a web site to answer our questions. Goin' fishin', not just wishin', in Amarillo |
Hi again,
Did you try calling the numbers I gave you? Fishing (permits) Aschi Sport Pfistergasse 15 CH-6003 Luzern Phone +41 (0)41 240 04 29 EW Fischery Center Edi Werner Sprengimatt 8 CH-6020 Emmenbrücke Phone +41 (0)41 282 06 00 s |
In Germany where I lived a person would need to take fishing lessons and pass a test before being allowed to buy a fishing license. Lucerne is in "German" speaking Switzerland, so I would assume that you would need to be fluent in the language to take the lessons and pass the test. One of my colleagues needed a place to try his hook and line after he got his license. He leased a lake so he could fish, and we had a good time listening to his fish stories in the office. For a web site to answer your questions I would suggest Google.com. IMO, you are wasting your time trying to get a fishing license. But why don't you make the phone calls as suggested by others and get real answers. At Fodor's we have a tradition of sharing information so please report back when you get the official scoop. |
Found in 2 seconds on Google:
http://www.upstreamflyfishing.com/ Bernese fishing license costs 50 CHF per day. You could e-mail Pascal Zeller at the address given and ask him what you want to know. He is a guide based in Interlaken and takes clients flyfishing for trout. |
Hi enzian,
Wrong lake! The op is going to Lake Lucerne, not Brienz -- As we noted in the first thread, each Canton has different rules. The number I gave is actually in Luzern so they'll know. s |

Hi Swandav---I know the OP will be in Luzern, but the map indicates Herr Zeller guides elsewhere than Brienz, after the one-day lesson. I thought he might like to try e-mailing for free before springing for a phone call (and possibly dealing with language issues). At least for me, from the west coast, I have to plan way ahead before calling---both as to planning out the German, and picking the time. Maybe from Texas it's not as difficult.

(and actually, my point was how easy it is to find this information---it was right there as the sponsored link at the top of the page).

OK ya'll, let'start fresh.
Dukey, thanks for the info. I'm just tryin ta gather all the info possible from everyone then start. ira, to begin with, I did check "fishing Lake Lucerne, rules & reg." on the frommer's site. It was pretty vague and I thought someone out there would have more info. swandav2000, thanks for the phone #s. I was just seeing if there was a web site first so as to not have a language barrier TX vs Swiss/German with the calls. I will try them. enzian, again I figured frommer's would have more info than google, but I will try them. Rex, I too will check out the site you mentioned. Leave my mother outta this. hopscotch, GOD help me if what you say is true about the language. Only time will tell. I guess if all else fails, I'll just pack up my travel rod and take my chances. janisj, I AM using the info I have received. All I'm trying to do is gather more with my "corrected thread". I'll meet you outside... Thanks again to all "Fodor virgin" but still goin fishin... |
A google search of "fishing in Switzerland" found this website among others.
http://geneva.angloinfo.com/countrie...nd/fishing.asp In addition, Switzerland has a tourist office in NYC with an 877 number and an email address for help. There is only a one hour difference between NY and TX and it is highly likely that someone there might speak English. However, with whitneykt's attitude I hope an international incident won't be provoked. |
"<i> as to not have a language barrier TX vs Swiss/German with the calls.</i>"
That is probably the least of your worries. Most of the Swiss I've met speak English as well (or if truth be told - better) than several Texans I know . . . . . |
jsmith, thanks for your input on the NYC info. Like some of the others suggested, I'll also try google.
And I didn't start it, all I did was ask a simple first time "fodor virgin" question and proceeded to get tarred and feathered by some for my "thread". Ya'll have to take it easy on us youngins! Like I said before, my little misses is the pro on this stuff, not me. an janisj, eye dunt no watt yur taukin a bowt, weez texins speek inglesh jist phine! |
Hey whitneykt,
I've been following this, not because I fish or know anything about it, it's just interesting and I hope you'll be able to find something. By the way, what kind of fish will you find in Lake Lucerne? There must be a message board somewhere that is about Fishing. Good luck and I'm glad you've been able to keep your sense of humor. Hope to hear how things turn out for you. |
At this point, I think it's safe to say that whitneykt is no longer a virgin.
=-O |
This is kinda cool.
And MelissaHl, yur right! I've been broken in pretty good the last few days! L84SKY, I think my first guess on trout was pretty close. Then I found grayling is good from Sept. on. Thanks for your interest. I'll let ya'll know what I find. |

I haven't fished in lake Lucern but I have a few thoughts about trying in this place. First, this lake is very, very deep. If I remember, this lake is about 300 meters deep (about 900 feet deep) so the fish are deep too. I can't give the precise area but there's a building and dock in Meggen. This place sells fresh fish and they've fished directly from this dock. Maybe if you get to Lucern, take a visit to Meggen and see what you can find. There's public transportation to Meggen. I again can not remember exactly where but I've seen boats with "deep riggers" which will allow stainless line drop down with a heavy weight. If you've fished before, you probably know about this kit. I used to see this kit in Lake Champlain in New York area. What I saw in Lucern was similar. If you decide to give lake fishing is too complicated, you can fish direct in the Ruess river. It starts from the lake heading towards the Rhein river. People are fishing in the river in Lucern near the further covered bridge. I didn't see any trout in the river. The fish being caught didn't look like a trout but maybe I'm wrong. Like you said, bring your rods and try to find a place to drop a line into the water. Good fishing Blackduff |
Did you say grayling? What a treat. If you're from Texas, do you know what they are? Are you a fly fisherman? (Or is that a rude question---I don't mean it to be, but everyone seems so sensitive here.)
|
Thanks for river tip, we'll look into it. Have been to some deep lakes in the Rockies but none like that! Sounds great! I am familiar with "down rigging". Maybe we'll get lucky and find a captain who'll take us out and try some.
Some friends caught and released some Grayling in Canada so I've only seen the pix of them. Luv to see one up close. I used to fly fish in Colorado but it's not "big" in TX. Thanks for the info. |
hey whitney, i know nothing about fishing, but i LOVE switzerland so was keeping an eye on this one.
whadda surprised to see 20+ replies to your question. way to go and welcome to Fodor's! |
