Less than a day in Naples
 

At the tail end of a business trip, I will arriving in the early afternoon in Naples and will be staying at the Palazzo Alabardieri Hotel (Chiaia area)and leaving for a flight back to the U.S. in the middle of the next day. I am a (fit) woman in my early 50s traveling alone.

Any recommendations for how to get a (safe) taste of the city by foot? Where to walk from the hotel? Convenient "must see" sites? Also, places to eat that are within a reasonable walk of the hotel area?

If your interested in History the Archaeology Museum has the best of the items removed from Pompeii and some from the palace at Capri. I was there in May and walked around during day with no problems. It is somewhat seedy but no one bothered me, just pay attention to business. Or you could take the train down to Sorrento 3.5e walk around, enjoy a meal and come back. 20-30 min ride.

Simply stay in Naples it is a charming town. Seedy?
Not really, eat by the bay in a nice restaurant, have coffee in famous Cafe Gambrinus, may be there is Opera the night you are there, that would be tremendous, the Archeological Musuem is one of the best.....Naples is city full of charm

Raphaekg: I would love it if you would take the time after your return home to describe your stay at the Palazzo Alabardieri. . It is located in a very upscale and, from what I have read, very safe neighborhood...Pza dei Martiri.

It is one of two hotels that I am considering for a stay in Naples but I have not found any reviews on this site ( TA ranks it very highly), so I would love to hear your impressions of both the hotel and the convenience of the area. ...many thanks and safe trip!

Take the Vomero funicular off Via Toledo (the station is near Piazza Trieste E Trento) and walk to Castel Sant'Elmo. Not only do the thick stone walls keep the place as cold as a meat locker even in July, but the view of metropolitan Naples from the roof cannot be beat.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the restaurant, but it was on an alley a block or so off Via Chiaia. It was zomething like Zi Aniello, Zio Something... and it had a small A-frame sign on Via Chiaia. Honest to God, Mama was in the kitchen cooking. There was no menu, Mama just brought out what she wanted you to have. For three people having appetizers -- a plate of prosciutto with a huge ball of bufala mozzarella -- a first course, vegetables, dessert, and vino and limoncello was only about €65 in 2005.
