Less Expensive Rental Car Options in Italy

Hi, everyone - I remember seeing something in a posting a while ago about an Italian website that had "cheaper" rental car rates that the biggies (Avis, Hertz, etc). I can't find that thread. Does anyone have any recommendations for less expensive rental cars? We'll be picking the car up and dropping it off in Rome. I can always go with the old stand-by, Avis, but I'm thinking there must be something cheaper out there. Thanks much!

After all that I have gleaned from this website, I do have an answer for you. Auto Europe seems to be what everyone uses for the best rental rates and fellow fodorites seem to be very happy with them.

To take it further, I was successful at getting Car Italy to give me a much better rate than Auto Europe and then I e-mailed Auto Europe to get them to match and they came within $10 USD with a zero deductible for damage (vs. Car Italy for $1,000 deductible). I took them up on their offer. My rate is approx. $45 per day, all inclusive. It seemed like a good rate, but any feedback would be helpful to me.

We used Autoerope for a one week rental (Venice to Como). Autoeurope is a rental car booking broker. Many people here have successfully asked them to match offers from other companies.

In the end we picked up the car one day before a semi official national holiday. I had to have some discussions with Europcar (the real auto rental comany). They initially wanted to put us into a French mini-van. Not Autoeurope's problem.

I have used thrifty.it and rent.it, I have used both for automatics and they were cheaper than the rest.

I used sixti
www.sixti.com
out of Rome for a microsized car.

I paid just under 172E for a 10 Day rental.
No problems with the company.
