Leptis Magna
Has anyone been there? Where exactly is it?
|
If you don't know where it is, why are you asking?
Lots of places ending "Magna" in Dorset, but as I'm a curious cat I typed it into Google, and there's a place with exactly that name in Libya. Is that the one you mean? |
It is in Libya and you cannot go now if you are a US citizen.
|
Actually, Americans CAN travel to Libya now, or at least under certain circumstances. (I'm not sure if it's completely unrestricted or not.) I know scholars at least can travel there again (as of 2004 or so) and carry out their work, which for archaeologists is very good news.
The Archaeological Institute of America was running tours to Libya last year; it'd be worth checking their website if you're seriously interested in going. Leptis Magna, to answer your question, is a Roman site in Libya that was mostly built up by the emperor Septimius Severus and his family in the late 2nd-early 3rd c AD. It's supposed to be an amazing site with incredible ruins. Obviously I've only seen pictures myself and haven't gone. |
FYI as you continue your research, sometimes this site is known as Lepcis Magna with a c.

fuzzy - I came across an ad promoting a bk & the author written on Magna. I am not a US citizen so if I wanted to I could head there without any prob...is that right?

Hi Twilight,
Interesting!! I guess if your government (whichever it is) places no obstacles in your way there's no reason why you shouldn't go. Never been myself. Nearest I got was two very hot hours on the runway at Benghazi a long time ago. I was on my way to Uganda, and the rumour at the time was that we were refuelling and it was taking so long because the captain had to pay in cash!! But I'm sure I've seen trips to Libya offered by some of the soft adventure companies. And I was right. Try: http://www.explore.co.uk/worldwide/t...urbroxid=13886 Sound like a brilliant trip!! Cheers. |
As of late 2006, Libya was barring entry to Americans wishing to visit Libya.
I doubt if the OP is truly interested in visiting this destination; other recent queries, including 5 on Leptis Magna, have ranged over a wide array of unrealted topics. |
Not at this stage ekscrunchy...but you should never be doubtful. A friend of mine came into an unexpected inheritance - now spends her time travelling btw returning to Oz. Her investments are sound. Doesn't need to work again.
I hold an Australian pp. & am not a negative thinker. |
Well, I would be very nice to your friend. Meanwhile, you can brush up on Libya with this:
