Leipzig to Dresden?

I've never been to Germany, and now I've book a flight into Leipzig (May 22), thinking it was close to Dresden, where I have a hotel. Since the plan doesn't arrive in Leipzig until 11 p.m., I'm worried that I won't be able to get any kind of transport to Dresden. Any suggestions?

There is a rail shuttle between the airport and the main rail station in central Leipzig; from there you can take one of the frequent trains to Dresden. I believe the trip Leipzig-Dresden takes about an hour and requires no changes.

Thanks for the advice, but when I go online the schedule shows that the Bahn stops running between Leipzig and Dresden before 11 p.m.

Am I stuck hiring a private car or renting a car and taking my chances driving to Dresden?

Your problem is your time of arrival! According tp the German Railway site the first rail connection to Dresden is early the next morning. Your only options are overnight in Leipzig, taxi, or rebook your flight. Good Luck!

I apologize for not having read your original post more carefully. Had I done so, I probably would not have even suggested taking the train.

I hope it works out for you.

Since you are arriving so late, I would think it would be wise to stay overnight in Leipzig and start out the next morning for Dresden. Can you cancel one night on your hotel in Dresden? I don't know where you're coming from, but if jet lag is also going to be a problem, I would definitely not be trying to get to Dresden that night. JMHO

Thanks for the good advice from everyone. I have arranged for a hotel in Leipzig -- and noticed that the Porsche plant is there. My husband will be thrilled, so I've pushed back my other reservations one day to give us the whole day in Leipzig and Porsche.

However, my hotel reservations for the next leg in Dresden and then in Prague are no longer viable. Any suggestions of quality places (not something ritzy, but mid-range, I guess) that you know are good bargains, as well?

Topping this for you. You might want to start a new thread about the Prague and Dresden accommodations. there is at least one person here who actually lives in dresden who will probably (hopefully) see it.

Sorry I cannot help with Prague (a great city BTW) but have only stayed in out of the way (kinda) and expensive (definitely!!!!!) hotels but you'll get a LOT of comments if you RE-POST.

I am the person who lives in Dresden. The previous posters are correct, the earliest train to Dresden goes in the morning. Well, I see you have made your arrangements.

A friend of mine recently toured the Porsche plant in Leipzig (she is economy student). She was impressed by the architecture and how they organise the production, but she did not like the car they produce there (the SUV type, Cayenne I think).

Be prepared that public transportation to the Porsche plant is not running frequently.

For Dresden: The 5star Radisson SAS Gewandhaus Hotel often has good internet deals. It's in general less expensive than what you might expect from a five star hotel - worth a look.

I use to recommend the Marthahaus Hospiz, a decent three star hotel. Central, but quiet location. Only 5-7 minutes walk from railway station Dresden-Neustadt.

A nice B&B is the Pension Am Grossen Garten - quiet neighbourhood, 10 minutes to the old town by tram. www.pension-am-grossen-garten.de

You can find hotel websites and more on www.dresden.de

Let me know if I can help further.

Hi
I second Ingo's suggestion, Radisson SAS Gewandhaus is a really centrally located hotel. We stayed there last September for a couple of days during our visit. It was a busy weekend and we got a room on the top floor. It was small but all that was available with a shower. The breakfast buffet was esxellent. If you drive to Dresden the hotel also has parking available. It was supposed to start renovation there in the fall. For a 5* it was a good value.
