J62's response is the best one. This is what we do before coming home if we have too many Euros. While we like to have some for the next trip, on occasion we have ended up with too many and just have the hotel apply them to our bill.

As someone else suggested, when we have leftover currency, we use it to pay our hotel bill. We've never misjudged our currency needs so badly that we've more than the total of the hotel bill.

I will usually keep USA $10 or so worth of the other currency just in case we have some last minute need. I'm usually able to spend it to good purpose somewhere before leaving the country.

I used Euro to buy lunch at Heathrow three weeks ago.
But they only accepted paper currency and gave me changes in Pound.
