Take your pick of castles and abbeys - are you renting a car or using public transport?

Places off the beaten track but local
Bolling Hall - One of my favorite museums, free entrance. http://www.bolling.net/bhall.html On the outskirts of Bradford so an easy trip, I don't recommend the city itself even though I was there 3 times in the last year - Family, ya know? Cliffe Castle in Keighley http://tinyurl.com/669byw Also free, not medieval but a beautiful Victorian house. Shidben Hall in Halifax - My sisters favorite since she lives local http://tinyurl.com/5tyvp6 Skipton would be good - local(ish) and you can shop while you are there - the castle is at the end of the Main Street. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skipton_Castle |
Yes you can do London as a day trip. You won't get to see everything but you could do a HoHo bus tour or just wander around some of the sights.
Schools in Yorkshire and Lancashire often take the kids on day trips to London. Depending on the train company you go with you may be able to have a meal on the train. Not the soggy sandwiches from the buffet but reasonably tasty food served with proper crockery and cutlery. Some companies only offer this for first class customers. |
hanleyster, did you not see my response to your other thread (about day trips from Halifax esp to mediaeval cities) ? I said I assumed you were visiting Halifax on business as there's no other reason - it's horrible.
There are also answers re day trips & mediaeval cities on your other thread. Re your Q about train prices - indeed, some of us haven't used them for years (for anything other than local journeys) as they are so expensive - it's cheaper to fly. |
