Leaving tomorrow for Languedoc!
I'm packed and ready to roll. Wish I could leave early. My boyfriend, childhood girlfriend and her husband and I have a week in a rental house above Beziers, in Villemagne-l'Argentiere. We have Narbonne, Pezenas, Sete, Agde and all points in between to check out. Olive oil mills, canals, windmills, roman ruins, chateaus, etangs and salt flats to check see. Then my boyfriend and I have 4 days in Paris before we come home. Beautiful weather forecast as well. Life is good, ain't it?

Life is good indeed. Sounds like you're going to have a great trip, pdx. Safe travels, and I hope you post some comments when you get back.
Anselm |
we will be going to France 5/11 - 1st week in the Dordogne and then 10 days in the Languedoc (7 around Montpellier and then 3 by Perpigan)
would love a report and advise on restuarants, sites etc that you liked thanks Dale Sevig |
pdx and Dave - have wonderful trips, and be sure to tell us about your experiences
|
This time I am going to attempt a trip report. It's intimidating for some reason. I'm taking a journal to jot notes and hope I stick with it. I'm having test anxiety already.
|
pdx, I know how you feel. Even rough notes or point form will delight us all--well, many of us; you've chosen a great area for your trip and I think the more who learn about it the more who might find it interesting. Lots of fascinating history there, too, especially for those interested in the Albigensian Crusade.
How are you getting to Villemagne-l'Argentiere? TGV to Montpellier and renting a car? Anselm |
Flying into CDG and taking the TGV (mainly for the experience) hopping off in Avignon (we ticketed to Marseilles then changed our plans) where we have a car reserved. We decided on Avignon so we could do a drive by on the Pont du Gard as we won't be heading that way the rest of the week. We'll leave from Toulouse due to the departure hours were better for us and is a similar drive time to MRS.
|
Am I'm sure the highpoint of the whole trip will be meeting the Tn Trio of Terror on the 18th at St. Eustache!
|
The only reason I'm going to Paris at all is for this little mini FGT. Paris. Hmmph. Been there done that.

How perceptive of you to choose Languedoc !
Just a reminder that I've gots of Languedoc stuff here : http://www.the-languedoc-page.com including photos, articles, tourist info, restaurant reviews, etc. Bon voyage Peter |
you'll enjoy the train to Avignon - very smooth and relaxing - pretty easy drive out of Avignon as well
do more than drive by the Pont du Gard - quite a sight |
How do you say 'Murphy's Law' in french? No where near that bad but we slid right on past Avignon and ended up in Marseilles. Beautiful weather in the Languedoc, stunning, really. I fell for Narbonne like a rock. I love that city! Check out this museum: http://orientaliste.free.fr/musees/narbonne/index.html
We arrived in Paris this afternoon and will be here only 3 days. I'll give more info when I get home and don't have to fight the keyboard. |

I spent what I have to believe is one of the all time great vacations in Languedoc! In 1998, my cousin was working for a French bank in Bahrain. One of his co-workers was a Frenchman. This gent offered my cousin his home in Lunel, Languedoc, for a month. He told my cousin that it was a huge house, and it could accomodate at least a dozen people. My cousin called me from Bahrain and asked if I would like to spend some time in Lunel. My wife and I jumped on a plane to Paris, and took another flight to Montpelier, and drove to Lunel. I gotta tell you, A BIG HOUSE?, it sure was. It had been a convent!. It looked like it was carved from one big rock. I met a lot of my family, who were also vacationing there. Many of my folks were disappointed at this large dark cave looking place, but my wife and I were really overjoyed at the difference of this place. It had about 25 rooms, but only a bath and a half! When everyone picked out their rooms, we all met in the large community kitchen and dining area and proceeded to map out our plans. One would believe that there would be lots of trouble with the bathing and sanitary situation, but I can't remember having any great problems. The town of Lunel is very non-descript, and really has no redeemong features, except for a few real good neighborhood restaurants. The best part of the story is that lodging was free! From Lunel, we went to Montpelier, a fantastic town, to Nimes, Avignon, Aix, and one undiscovered treasure, Montelimar, by accident. There were so many great moments on this trip that I can't write them down, but I have to say, any time spent in that area of France is really time well spent.
|
Just to say that Lunel is not very exciting, but has a fine medieval centre.
It has been much improved over recent years Peter |
