Thanks to all Fodorites. We're going to stay 5-6 nights and Paris travel to the outskirts, maybe staying somewhere overnight or just daytriping. Perhaps we'll even have the time to visit Bruges, thus satisfying our desire to visit more than 1 country during our trip. Thanks again to all Fodorites, who responded. I couldn't have made these plans without you!

I've enjoyed following your exchange, George, and your last posting sounds like a great plan. I didn't even know it was possible to daytrip to Lyon! You can check in at the French Nat. Tourist office when you get to Paris -- or the Train information office at one of the big stations -- they'll give you zillions of day-trip ideas. But do take the time to savor Paris -- all the neighborhoods. Brugge will be a delightful contrast. My vote, of course, is use the trains -- ditch the car-- Actually you can visit a lot of places in the vicinity around Paris via the RER (not certain if I'm remembering correctly) -- the extension of the marvelous metro. By the way, if you are interested in Van Gogh, don't forget his little Auvers s'Oise just north of Paris. J.

George: I think your final thoughts are the most reasonable and a sure-fire sucess. There are so many fascinating towns around Paris in all directions. Why spend the precious time you have traveling when you could be experiencing? Besides those already mentioned: St. Germain-en-Laye (take RER) Chateau de Malmaison, Canal St. Martin, Senlis. Hope this reaches you in time. I'm jealous! Have a great time. Give us a report when you get back.
