leaving in a week desperate for help
 

Just after I booked our flights and hotels my mother became very ill. With everything going on and not knowing if we would beable to go on the trip, I haven't planned anything. If all goes well we are leaving in a week. Normally I would have spent the past few months going through old posts and asking questions. I am OK without much planned, but I am concerned I will miss something amazing. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE share some of the highlights and places we should not miss in or near Nice (no car), St. Remy (car)and Paris (not as important unless off the beaten track, we have been there a few times.) Sorry about your mother, that is tough.

Just a quick comment on things to do in Nice: wander the old town, eat pizza (since Nice used to be part of Italy, the pizza is good!), visit the wonderful Chagall and Matisse museums, try to go to the Russian Orthodox church (I went to a candlelit service there I will never forget, beautiful building)and stroll the waterfront. If you can rent a car for one day there, drive to St-Paul-de-Vence for lunch and to wander. If you like modern art, the Maeght Foundation museum there is very nice.

Hello panucci, have never been to France I do not have any recommendations. But I did want to say that if you do visit the Russian Orthodax Church I am certain all women will be reguired to wear a skirt (and not a mini skirt). A relative by marriage is Russian Orthodax and even for the wedding ceremony all females guest were told that pants were not allowed.

Sure hope your mother is getting better and that you will be able to take your trip. Best wishes.

Good to know about the pants. As for a mini skirt....I wish I could still get away with wearing one.

We like small museums! We also LOVE to eat. Any good restaurants?

In Nice, the old part of town is a treat just wondering around and you can stop at the Musée Peynet. ( a favorite of mine)Peynet was famous for his cartoons, books, "The lovers"
but the museum shows other cartoonists works.
With a car in St Remy. you can visit so many villages, and just outside is the ancient Glanum.

The Chagall and Matisse Museums are wonderful and not too large. My favourite thing to do in Nice is just to walk around and find the different squares hidden in the warren of streets-it's sensory overload sometimes so be sure to stop for a drink to unwind. For excellent and inexpensive pizza, head to Restaurant du Gesu on 1 place du Jesus. I learned about it on allaboutnice's page on Virtual Tourist where she has lots of good resto info:

Add La Zucca Magica, 4, bis Quai Papacino on the harbour, to your list if you're open to an all veggie Italian meal (reservations needed).

If you enjoy Matisse, I'd urge you to visit his chapel on the outskirts of Vence. It's AMAZING. We always have a car but there's public transportation info here.

We have only been to St. Remy once but the highlights for us were the Roman Ruins (Glanum)and the adjacent Van Gogh museum in the hospital. I'm not sure how much time you have but the Pont du Gard is an architectural wonder.
