Leavenworth, Washington
Yes, I know this is the European forum. Has anyone been to Leavenworth WA and does it really seem like a Bavarian village? Would it be a nice place to spend a couple of days in the fall?

I live in the area. I wouldn't say that it really seems like a Bavarian village. It is someone's idea of what a Bavarian village looks like. There is piped music and a lot of places to buy butter cookies and ice cream. I don't think I'd plan a trip to Leavenworth solely based on trying to re-create a Bavarian feel. Leavenworth is in a beautiful part of the state and there are equally beautiful places that are less touristy/tacky to visit. Leavenworth is worth a stop but I wouldn't make it the destination.

Hi orangetravelcat,
I lived in Bavaria and live in Seattle now and have been to Leavenworth. IMO Leavenworth is trying to copy a Bavarian village and this is really just a touristy gimmick, however, it is really gorgeous countryside around there and the drive is quite beautiful in the fall through Steven's Pass. I'd suggest you stop off in a tiny town called Index and check out the waterfalls right off the highway at exit 39. So, yes it would be a nice place to spend a couple of days in the fall for the scenery. |
Having never been to a real Bavarian village I can't compare, but I thought Leavenworth was fun for a couple of days. We stayed at the Blackbird Inn and enjoyed walking around Blackbird Island.

I have to agree with the others. However, our family really enjoys the area. There is so much to do...skiing, hiking, etc. We have rented cabins the last 2 Christmas holidays in the area and even though I managed to break my hand skiing there this year, I still had a fantastic time.
