Please lay off the "blue" jeans bashing. For the past 25 years, jeans have been a huge part of our lives. DH is a jean salesman, and that product has bought us a lovely home, educated two sons, paid for wedding, vacations, cars, and yes, even a savings account.

There's nothing inherently wrong with jeans. "Butt" the way they look on some people...

I'm laughing all the way to the bank.

Jeans update: Posters are seeking information about appearing attractive and stylish. Jeans are comfortable and practical and many people wear them. I simply said that they are not flattering. My wife doesn't let me go into town wearing jeans. I am not to embarrass her! Jeans are for garden work.

Londonholly Oct 21st, 2004 02:17 AM

GSteed, it always depends on the quality (and the fit and form) of the garment, and the person in it.

One can look stylish with jeans and out of this world in a trouser suit or suit if the fitting and combination is wrong...

To look good depends on your personal style and not on an all safe piece of clothing as far as I can see!

thomthumb Oct 21st, 2004 04:15 AM

I would much rather have people like me than be comfortable. "Jeans are for garden work"? Next you're going to tell me that I can't wear my knee pads!

Gsteed
I think you must be a little bit older than the baby boomer jeans generation.
In a dozen trips to Europe I have taken both blue and black jeans and never felt out of place.
Have worn them since my teens and don't plan to stop now.

degas Oct 21st, 2004 06:23 AM

If you have the really big butt and hefty legs required to "fill out" a five year old pair of jeans, then go for it. Life's too short to wonder about all the wild laughter going on behind you.

Scarlett Oct 21st, 2004 06:34 AM

SeaUrchin, (though I am not even close to being M_K)I think the sweater has the look but not quite the quality that I like. Rabbit fur has that tiny bit of ratty look to it, cheap. And that color would be perfect for someone in Palm Beach :D
But if it were cashmere and a dark rich color I would love it .
Marilyn, that is the Truth, Honey! The Thrill of the Hunt ~
miu miu was a mime? say it 3 times really fast.
The jeans that are like a Miracle bra for your butt are made by the Seven jeans company that costs about $300- if one reeeally lives in their jeans, they might be worth the investment, but I tend to get paint on mine or the dog finds them on the floor and sleeps on them..I would rather spend the $300 on a pretty top or some great shoes.
But then if we win that Lottery, I will buy all my friends Miracle Butt Jeans :D

SeaUrchin Oct 21st, 2004 07:30 AM

Scarlett, good points about the tattered rabbit, I agree, I like the style though. I am trying to get away from black black black all the time so I have been adding a little color. But I do have a hooded cashmire sweater in black, so with black boots and my jeans that should be fine.

OK, enough of my clothes, back to the discussion.

m_kingdom2 Oct 21st, 2004 07:48 AM

Never wear black with blue jeans, it looks cheap.

SeaUrchin dear, that sweater is the sort of thing one would wear on a cruise and kept in a wardrobe with cheap gold shoes. It's naff, and in my opinion, completely devoid of any style whatsoever.

Dunhill have beautiful mink collared coats for men this season, and virtually every Italian designer has great fur accessories for women - they're classic and should last forever.

lucygirl Oct 21st, 2004 07:55 AM

MK, where do your fashion tips come from?!? huh? never wesr blue jeans with black???

well i've been doing this my whole life and so far no one has mistaken me as "cheap".

m_kingdom2 Oct 21st, 2004 07:58 AM

Blue jeans worn with black create a thick and obvious banding around the waist - the top and bottom half don't merge, they sit opposing each other.

Charcoal is fine to wear with dark jeans as the two colours share common tones.

lucygirl Oct 21st, 2004 08:09 AM

mk,

what banding--what are you talking about??

are you in fact the infamous Mr. Blackwell of the fashion lists in disguise? don't worry i won't blow your cover.

m_kingdom2 Oct 21st, 2004 08:48 AM

A black band for your top half and a blue band for your bottom half.

It's a bit like when you're at a restaurant and you feel the dish doesn't really incorporate its constituent ingredients.

SeaUrchin Oct 21st, 2004 10:00 AM

Too funny, ok, I will drop the naff, tattered, Miami Beach/cruise style bunny top, it just caught my eye, but maybe that is the problem!

I get what you are saying about charcoal and jeans, by all means I want my bands to match!! I usually wear black with jeans completely unaware that my bands contrasted naffishly!

Oh, no, not my gold shoes too!!

Scarlett Oct 21st, 2004 10:37 AM

SeaUrchin, what if you wore your gold shoes with a gold top? Then would your top and toes escape naffishness? Having seen so many pairings of silk cami tops etc with jeans, I think you might be able to keep the gold shoes after all :D

Marilyn Oct 21st, 2004 10:42 AM

SeaUrchin, here's what I think about that sweater (not that anyone asked). It would be a fun wrap for a winter party, over black silk pants and sexy top, for example. But not very practical otherwise. You wouldn't want to wear it every day. If the collar were detachable, it would be a lot more useful as you could use the cardigan (mostly silk) sans fur as a spring sweater as well, or to stay cozy in overly air-conditioned restaurants in Palm Beach, as Scarlett suggests.

On the other hand, think of the sweet little bunnies they kill to get that collar. Yes, I am very much anti-fur. It's just so, so, so ... UNNECESSARY!

m_kingdom, black top of any sort, blue jeans, black boots, black leather jacket = THE UNIFORM. It may be naff, or unflattering, but wear it in any US urban setting and one thing is certain. You will not stand out from the crowd. :-D

m_kingdom2 Oct 21st, 2004 10:52 AM

My dear, in some naff American suburb I'd want to stand out from the crowd, in fact I always want to stand out from the crowd, I don't buy clothes thinking of blending in.

If you don't wear leather shoes, and don't eat meat, then you can be anti-fur, if not, you're an hypocrite. Fur is very luxurious - I'm not talking some rabbit rubbish - and always looks good, and is usually timeless.

SeaUrchin Oct 21st, 2004 11:13 AM

Well, I used to have some gold flats, but I don't think I still have them or I would wear them as retro with a rhinestone buckle attached.

Yep, the sweater is out, I agree, poor bunnies - killed to become a naffish collar!!

Wait a minute, I do have a lined black leather jacket with some sort of fur collar, maybe it is fake fur, I'll check. OK, I'll wear it and jeans, I like to say the word "naffish" anyway.

Miu Miu was a mime, nifty not naffish, say it three times fast.

Madison Oct 21st, 2004 11:19 AM

And let's not forget Valentino who also has a line of blue jeans this season

Scarlett Oct 21st, 2004 11:24 AM

In NYC there is a word for people who might be like some fashion mavens here, it is Nebbish. I would rather be naffish than nebbish :)

As to the bunnies..I have a fur coat, shearling with fur lining. I am sorry, the little animals were killed before I found the coat, I was unable to save them by not buying the coat. But it does keep me warm ( which might be a moot point since I will be in Fl for the winter)
But I do not eat meat...how about that? I am just a paradoxical little bundle of contradictions~
