I would guess that the cheapest way would be to get to Salzburg with a budget airline, and then a train from there.

I am sure that hardy is aware that last minute travel will not be cheap.
I could not find a fare for trains (or train/bus combo) all the way to St. Johann on trenitalia.com, but I did find a 79euro per person fare from Rome to Villach. Departs Rome Termini at 19:04, arrives Villach 04:42, no changes.
Then on oebb.at, form Villach to St. Johann, departing at 07:16, for 25.80 euro.
So best total price I found is 107.80 euros per person.
so for < 1000 euros you can get there by Sunday.

Rome to Salzburg - change in Venice, for 84 euros, then Salzburg to St. Johann for 10.50, so total of 94.50 euros per person!!

Tomorrow morning at 7 AM, you can get a Vueling flight to Munich for €65. I checked on skyscanner for 8 people, so it seems that have 8 seats left.
Then at 10:18, you can get a train to St. Johann, with a change in Salzburg, which will get you to St. Johann by 13:02. Tickets are €27.80 per person. Total cost €92.80, total travel time 6 hours.
