Learning Italian

I would like to learn to speak some Italian (hopefully beyond a few tourist phrases) before we go over in October. I regret not having learned much before we went over before. Can anyone recommend a study course (tapes, books, etc)? Thanks!

Barbara,

Check what's available at your local library. We like Pimsleur, but it's expensive if you decide to buy.

Italian I [AUDIOBOOK] (Audio CD)/ Italian II
by Pimsleur (Author)

or try:
Learn in Your Car Italian Complete (Learn in Your Car) (Audio CD)
by Henry N. Raymond (Author)

Please check this post: "Pimsleur - the good and not so good...."
you can see what works for others better.

I really liked Michele Thomas' system when I was learning Spanish, so I just bought the Italian cds. He gets you thinking in the language, rather than memorizing phrases, so it worked great for me.
