Leaning building in Venice
 

Hi there,

Can any body help?

I'm am trying to remember where the leaning building is in Venice (it leans much like the the Leaning Tower of Pisa - though shorter). Can anybody help with the location. I tried to find it on a recent trip but to no avail. Would like to locate it on next trip.

All I can remember is it is grey and leans pretty obviously.

My recollection is that there are several leaning church campaniles in Venice (due to flooding or instability of the soil perhaps?) There is a well-known one on the island of Burano. Could this be the one you're thinking of?

Are you thinking of the bell tower on the island of Burano? That's the smaller of the two main "other islands", Murano (glass blowing) being the larger. Burano is known for lace making and brightly colored houses and is a little further out in the lagoon. The bell tower quite obviously leans.

there is also a leaning tower in bologna.

Could it be the leaning campanile on the island of San Pietro in the far eastern part of Castello? I walked out to that area when I was there a couple of weeks ago, and it definitely leans!

I think a better question might be, "can anyone tell me where a building in Venice is that DOESN'T lean?"

I'd be inclined to endorse the answer given by marty. We've walked twice to this church in Castello or Cannaregio that has a leaning tower and was the main cathedral of Venice up until they constructed St. Mark's. Hope you find it next time.

Thanks everyone - it was not on Burano so I would guess that it must be the one that JMV suggested as I did walk only a short distance to it from the hotel I stayed at on my first trip and I just could not find it on my last trip. I'll just have to look harder next time. Patrick, you are quite right about all Venice building leaning somewhat - however this building does actually lean more than most.

"leans more than most"???? well, hopefully when you do find it it won't fall on you..you certainly wouldn't forget it then!

It sounds like JMV is talking about San Pietro di Castello. It was the cathedral until San Marco became the cathedral, which was in the 18th or 19th century (long after San Marco was actually built). And its tower leans quite a bit. It's way far east, not too far from the public gardens.
