Leaf peeping on the Danube - Sept or Oct?

We are thinking about a Danube river cruise (Prague to Budapest) for next fall. Trying to decide between a mid Sept. / mid Oct. departure date. Will there be alot of color along this stretch of the river? - which date do you think would be better? Oct is cheaper and more convenient but if Sept. would be MUCH better weather-wise we may opt for that instead. Thanks!

Prague to Budapest on the Danube? Think again. Maybe Vienna to Budapest.

To be precise, there is an overland transfer from Prague to Linz, then Linz to Budapest on the river. So do you have an answer to the question asked or were you just helping me clarify the geography? Thanks! SueC1

No, I don't have a precise answer. I do have an opinion, though, based in small part on my own experience and in greater part on what I have read.

The Danube in central Europe is, for the most part, not highly scenic. The appeal lies in the towns and cities more than in the landscape. I doubt if it is worth more money and trouble to travel in September than in October -- but I would very much prefer the first half of October to the second half because in some years temperatures drop quite sharply in late October.

If you want coloured leaves, September is definitely too early.

From the comments I have seen on cruisecritic and the albums posted I think Mid October would be perfect for seeing the changing leaves. There is a photo album on cruisecritic for a mid October cruise and the colors were amazing.
September would be early to see the fall colors.

Regarding the Danube not being scenic,Not true. Dh and I cruised Budapest to Amsterdam on the Avalon Tranquility last July and the Danube was very beautiful.Absolutely a wonderful vacation!!!

I was also wondering how you would cruise the Danube between Prague and Vienna ... so it's Linz to Vienna - ok, mostly an ok landscape, but the Wachau is very scenic.

Definitely go in mid Oct, not earlier, if you want to see the colours changing. In my experience the weather is also more stable in Oct.

Well this is the first time I have heard of the leaves turning amazing colours. I believe you are hoping for some sort of Maine experience and will be dissapointed.

The important issue for me would be to ensure that the Danube is not in flood. Hence I would suggest September
