Hi Jane,
We stayed there last October and loved it! We stumbled upon it a couple of years ago and tried to stay there but they were booked. I never forgot the place and we hit it lucky and stayed there for a night on our way back to Paris. The setting is picture-book perfect. The decor oozes charm. The restaurant is very good, also.
I would not recommend staying there to see the caves - it's really too far away. We stayed at the Esplanade in Domme and liked it. Sarlat and Les Eyzies are also good places to stay to explore the caves.
I hope you stay at least a night at le Moulin de l'abbaye-it's very romantic.

Pardon me for being so ignorant, but where is the Moulin de l'Abbaye? The only Abbaye I know of is in St-Cyprien, and I don't think it's a moulin, though it's plenty close to the Lascaux caves (about 30 km away). If that's the Abbaye you're thinking of, it's an excellent hotel and restaurant in an interesting town in the heart of the Périgord Noir - great Sunday market. If it's not, well, write back and I can tell you of other places to stay nearby Montignac, which is where Lascaux II is - I live near Les Eyzies part-time and know the area well.

My wife and I stayed there several years ago and loved it. The main building and the Moulin are a beautiful picturesque setting. We stayed in the anex built into the cliff across the road and our room was very very nice. The restaurant is fantastic, and you can see the cheif in the mornings cutting herbs for his meals in the herb garden to the left of the path as you enter the main building. They will have you park your car in a cave across the steet, in the summer it is great, because your car is always nice and cool.
Something interesting about the sight is that the whole area floods I believe in the spring and most of the main building is under 6 or 8 feet of water until the flood receeds.
It is a Ralais et Chateaux establishment and is relatively expensive. Almost all the guests were British, German, Dutch, etc. no French!! I think that we were the only Americans.

Now, it's all come back to me (I don't get to Brantôme often). The Moulin de l'Abbaye is indeed a gem of a place. We had a spectacular meal in its restaurant some years ago. If you stay there, be sure to visit the château at Bourdeilles and make a trip south to Hautefort to see the château that was one of several featured in the movie "Ever After." As a base for visiting Lascaux II and the other prehistoric sites, however, Brantôme is not a good choice - too far, and that part of the Dordogne is nowhere near as pretty as the area around Sarlat, which IS central to the caves and other main sites. The Esplanade in Domme is indeed a great hotel, but I'd avoid it in summer because Domme is incredibly crowded and getting in and out of the town through the tiny medieval gates can take forever. If you are looking for nice hotels/inns in the Sarlat area, I'd recommend the Hôtel de la Fermy Lamy, the Metairie, the Hostellerie de Meysset, the Moulin de la Beune in Les Eyzies, or the Belle Etoile in La Roque-Gageac. You'll need reservations for Lascaux II if you're going in summertime, just so you know.

It's a bit late to be contemplating a June rental. My place is usually rented for the season by mid-January, give or take a week here or there. So if you're serious, you should act quickly. My best suggestion would be to contact the agency called Simply Périgord. Their website is www.simply-perigord.fr. Or you could e-mail them at [email protected] The person to ask for is Colleen Snitch (the owner). They handle about 50 houses in the area. Another possibility, but not exactly in the area you're looking at, is to e-mail [email protected] - she and her husband have a nice little house for rent in Labastide-Murat, down near Cahors. They use it about half the year and rent it the rest. Hope this helps.

I agree that Simply Perigord is your company. We rented a house thru them last fall. Because of the gas strike, we had to leave our car at a rail station and take a train to the tiny town where our rental was. I called SP and they sent a man to the station to pick us up. He then took us to a grocery store and a bakery for supplies, then on to the house. I heartily recommend them. Also, if you are near Tremolat, don't miss the Bistrot en Face. Best trout I've ever had. Enjoy! The area is wonderful.
