"Le Divorce" Reviews?
My husband and I may go see this movie over the weekend as we like Kate Hudson and adore Paris.
The San Francisco Chronicle gave a very good review. What do/did people on this board think of the movie? |
I personally hated the book-didn't even get through it-Ebert gave it 2 stars out of 4 this am on Chicago tv--Said it was "disappointing".
I didn't read the book so I don't know how faithful the movie was to it, but I enjoyed the movie a lot. I suppose it could have explored the difference in cultural attitudes more than it did, but I liked what it did touch on. Great cast and the movie really shows off Paris beautifully.
How much of Paris does it really show? That is often the deciding factor for me. The LA Times didn't like it either. It says that "it takes the luster off of Paris". That's pretty tough to do!
Hi Daph. Well as I noted on another thread here, it's certainly not a travelogue about Paris; first, and foremost, it's a story about the people. Rather than tell you what it specifically shows, I'd rather leave it as a surprise for you but suffice it to say that if you love Paris like I do, I think you'll be pleased. And I do not agree with that comment by the LA Times reviewer at all.
The NYC critics were not too enthusiastic about it! Evidentally, it's not up to the usual Merchant-Ivory standard.
After hearing the Comments Kate Hudson Said about Americans Visting Paris . I will boycott all her movies !
LOL, the only comment I saw that she made was that "some Americans" are a source of embarrassment because they are loud and boorish.
I agree with her completely! But even if I didn't, her personal opinions are her personal opinions; I would not avoid a movie because I didn't agree with the views of an actor! |
This has got to be now my favorite film showing off Paris. I'll be waiting for those who know those resteraunts which ones they were and which market she was shopping in. The credits went by too fast after the song list.
Glad to see you agree with me about the way it shows off Paris. I knew you would. :)
Topping to ask for more reviews a week later.
We have yet to have gone. |
Is the movie worth seeing for the scenery despite the story? Read the book and hated it!
A great Web site is: www.mrqe.com (movie review query engine)
Type in the movie, hit "find reviews". A long list of magazine/newspaper reviewers will come up (not just lay people giving opinions). NOTE: if the movie is really new it may take a few days to get a wide range of reviews. |
swalter, yes, for the scenery. I thought the couple playing the Russian and her husband were too contrived. Thought Naomi Watts was very good.
My favorite line reminded me of fodors when someone asks if the water was safe to drink. I won't say who so you can find out for yourself, And the answer from another character was; "For God's sake, you're not in Aphganistan"or something like that. |
In the book, Roxy says the water's safe, that they're not in Istanbul. Funny if they changed that to Afghanistan...maybe they plan to release the movie in Turkey ;-)
Newspaper reviews are indeed easy to find; I was looking for reviews from fellow-Fodorites.
Very few scenes of Paris..thought the entire movie was charmless and the one time Hollywood could have legitimately cast a MUCH older man opposite a young woman, they didn't. I, however, liked the book.
I havent read the book and I thought the move was nice on the eyes with good views of Paris.
I thought Kate Hudson was miscast, when it came time for her to react or act she grinned instead. If her affair was supposed to be passionate, it certainly wasn't noticable. The role of the American man married to the Russian was silly and contrived to me. What did he want the sister to do? She was being wronged herself. The scenes on the Eifel tower were poorly acted IMHO. If I had a tape of the movie I would turn off the sound and watch Paris. |
The Paris scenes are touristy and don't reflect the richness of the city.
I thought the movie was rather dark with several violent and depressing plot twists. |
Nocinonut, I agree with you about the character played by Matthew Modine, my least favorite in the film.
