Layover in Munich

Hi there,

I've got one of those 6-hour layovers and Munich, and must get in to the Marienplatz to see the glockenspiel and sit outside for a kaserspaetzle and and halb-drocken. (sp???) My first trip back in 23 years! I've been reviewing other threads, and just want to confirm that this plan should work:

From the airport, take the S-bahn directly into the Marienplatz station. ( The S-8 Eastbound should work. )

Should only take about a half hour, right? Alternatively, I could take the airport bus, right? Any idea how much a cab would cost these days?

Thanks for the help, folks!

Take the S-8, but check a map first. You might get worried looking for the eastbound train. It heads west then south, then west again. But then again, you are starting form the end of the line so go the other way :-)

Take any S-Bahn leaving the airport. Both S8 and S1 get to Marienplatz in appr. 45 minutes on different routes, though, which does not matter in your case.
Get a day pass (Single-Tagesarte Gesamtnetz for €10) from the vending machines on the platform, so you don't lose time standing in line at the counter.
The day pass covers any kind of local transport in Greater Munich, including the S-Bahn back to the airport.

The bus is no alternative since it does not serve Marienplatz (but central station and Northern districts of Munich) and you'd have to pay twice to get in and back out of the city.

Have fun :-)

oops.. please edit:
The name of the day pass is "Single-Tageskarte Gesamtnetz" with a "K" in Tageskarte.

Thank you both so much! Will look for the Single-Tageskarte Gesamtnetz. Can't wait!

This worked out beautifully! Thanks for the encouragement and advice. Details to follow in Greece trip report!

Sounds like you will have a quick turn around counting about an hour each way (with waiting time) and needing to go back through security when ou get back to the airport. Even if that just leaves you an hour, I would do it. An hour in Munich is a whole lot better than no time in Munich. Enjoy the taste of this wonderful city then start making plans for whe you can come back and stay longer.

I also have a layover in July. Landing at 6.35 am from Russia, then leaving again at 11.40 or so for Spain.

I have already been to Munich but wondering, weather permitting, is there a sweet/ pleasant village nearby on public transportation that is not as far as Munich that would justify leaving the airport and walking aorund a bit in the fresh air?

I'm not much of a shopper so the airport shops are not enticing me.

Bus no 512 from airport Terminal 1 (06:55 or 07:28), takes 40 minutes to Erding.

Thanks..looks sweet.

Anyone know of anyplace even closer?

We like Freising. It is 15 minutes by cab. About the same by Shuttle; the leave every 20 minutes.

Go up to the Domberg and visit the Chapel where the current Pope was origianlly ordained or go visit the oldest active brewery in the world, Weihenstephan's. I best like walking around downtown and visiting a cafe.

Regards, Gary
