Layover in Amsterdam

On our upcoming trip to Rome we have a 10 hour layover in Amsterdam. We want to go into town for a while but don't want to tote our carry on bags[big luggage is checked thru]
Are there lockers in the airport , what do they cost and how big are they ?? Thanks dap1206

There are lockers in the basement of the main arrivals hall - all different sizes and cost about 5 euros per 24 hours or so but varies as to size of lockers. Anyway loads of them so always available. Also manual left luggage there. Some are very very big.

Thank you, I thought we could leave it there but wanted to make sure. I'll Get some Euros in the airport and stash the bags !!

There is left luggage airside as well. If you are going USA-AMS-Rome, then I would consider passing through to the Schengen side of the airport and storing the bags there before exiting the airport. The time to do security and passport control at the connecting checkpoint will likely be no worse than passport control out to Amsterdam, and it will make it slightly less hassle when you come back.

The luggage lockers take credit cards, BTW.

There is a change machine in the locker area and there is a manned desk for necessary change.

There have been reported problems with some American credit cards in Dutch train stations at least - tgourmet did yours work - and at Amsterdam Centraal it seems credit cards are the only way to pay for the lockers and at least last year when i was there mine would not work and there was no staff around. Hopefully this snafu has worked out - yes i thought there were some lockers inside Customs but was not sure - better there for sure for convenience.

Never had a problem with my credit cards in the luggage lockers. I usually use my US-issued AMEX.

Most non-Dutch credit cards, however, won't work in the train ticket machines. Even my Danish chip-and-pin card doesn't work. Get cash for that, or use a counter.
