Lavender 1st week of August
We are going to stay in the Luberon the first week of August. I know that in some areas of Provence the lavender has been cut at that time. Can you give me some information about where can we see the lavender fields in August? We have been yet in the areas of Sault and Simiane la Rotonde so we wuold like to discover another place, if possible. Maybe, it's impossible but I try.
Thanks again. |
A beautiful place to see the lavender is next to the Abbaye de Sénaque, in the Lubéron.
|
on the Sault plateau, the Digne area, it's mostly the lavandin( a hybrid of true and spike lavenders) that is grown. True lavender requires high altitudes, so go to Haute Alps around Rosans. We were there one year in early august andstill saw alot of fields not yet harvested. Some harvesting goes on til september.

You can also see lavender in bloom in the Drôme Valley, up east of Montélimar.
|
and if you look at the map where you will be in Luberon, I'd head towards Verdon and if you haven't seen the Grand Canyon of France=The Gorge of Verdon, you are in for a double treat.

Thanks Underhill and Cigalechanta.
We'll consider your suggestions. We know the Sénanque Abbey and also the Gorges du Verdon. Maybe a good option would be the Drôme Provençale (does it include the area of Rosans?). The only problem is the distance (we are going to stay in Gordes). What about the area near Grignan? Do you know if there are lavender fields there? And, for other reasons, do you think is it worth visiting Grignan, Saint Paul Trois Chateaux, Valreas,...? Thanks again. |
Oh, the area around Grignan is just beautiful, there is plenty of lavender around there. There is a small lavender field right at the end of the main road into Grignan, actually. there are also some wineries you can stop by, if you want. I was just around there a couple weeks ago, and the lavender was beautiful (as well as the sunflowers, although I think they peak a bit later). I don't have my map here, but it is very pretty just driving on some of the main roads around there (I know I took the road east that Grignan is on to Nyons--I think that is D941--and then returned west on a different road a bit north of that out of Nyons, maybe through Dieulefit. I was staying just a bit south of Montelimar in a very nice country inn place (Domaine du Colombier).
St-Paul is nothing worth seeing at all, I've been there. |
