Laundry in Paris
I will be in Paris for a month and no doubt will need to do laundry. Are there public laundry facilities in the city? About how much to they cost? I will be staying in a students home and don't want to impose myself too much. Thank you.

There are laundromats in Paris; there are dry cleaners who will do your laundry for you. You'll soon learn why Parisians don't have dozens of outfits like we do...7 years ago (the LAST time I did laundry in Paris) it was $5 a load (wash/dry) in the laundromat. The machines are about 2/3 the size of American machines. I assume that the dry cleaners' charges would be worse, and that the prices in the laundromats must be substantially higher now. Consider bringing paper clothes.

hi
i was in paris 3 years ago as a student. i stayed one month. the lavaries can be found in each arrondissement. i will say the ones in the student areas are cheaper. you put the required coins in a machine, which spits out a token (jeton).load the machine insert token and wash. same system for the dryer. if at all possible do laundry once a week and only 1 load. jeans are terrible to dry! i brought my own soap in a small bottle.hope this helps. oh yes the dry cleaning is very expensive! wear clothes more than once.

Sarah, it is EXPENSIVE as others have posted and time consuming. I don't recall the exact costs, but even if it is $5 per load as indicated by Elvira, that isn't too bad. How often are you going to do a wash? We were in France for 3 weeks and did a wash once. Even if we did one wash per week, the cost would still be around $20, I suppose which isn't that much considering all your other expenses. I was more upset on how long it took rather than what it cost.

You could just drop your clothes off, but now we are talking big bucks. I think it was like $5 or $6 per dress shirt.

We were in Paris last spring and found laundromats (lavage) easy to find, and easy to use. Even easier, thanks to friendly advice from other customers (locals). The place that we used had one central control board where you put the money into a numbered slot that corresponded to the number of your machine.

This is an expensive issue. If you want to have it done by a laundry shop, they will charge around 45 FF (ca. 7.5 USD) to do it themselves... You can also ask for your shirt being cleaned by an industrial laundry service and it will be 22 FF (3.6 USD) per shirt. Tee-shirts are a bit a less expensive, but prices in Paris are definitely higher for that type of services. And they will of course require two or three days.
OK, having your laundry done in Paris is more expensive than in the States, but nothing to die about. For a DIY laundry at a laundramat ("laverie automatique"), it'll cost you about 20-30 F, drying included. An item given to dry-clean is usually 17 F, a shirt left to wash and iron is about 15 F.

Hi Sarah,

I just came back from Paris, where I stayed for a few weeks in an apartment in the Latin Quarter. We did several loads of laundry, which costs 24 FF per load, and one franc per minute to dry, so about 15-20 FF to dry each load. The machines are small, but thorough, and take forever if you wash on hot water (at least 45 minutes or more per load). In order to get in to the LavClub, you have to press a button on the door. Then, you load clothes in the washer, put your money in the central coin machine, and enter the number of your washer, and the machine then starts your wash. This is done because of vandalism in the laundromats. Take plenty of change, as it is generally not made at the laundromat. Otherwise, you will be running to the market and buying lots of stuff just to get the proper change! For some reason, the French seem to dislike changing any paper money, and prefer always exact change. Also, the laundromats open at 7:00 A.M.

Hope this helps-at least the prices are current

Anyone have any current info regarding laundry facilities (laundromats, launderettes)?
Looking for current pricing and a location in the Latin Quarter, preferably the 5th e.
Am tentatively planning a trip to Paris in mid-April and need to know. Thanks! : )
The cost is roughly what was indicated : around 5 ? for a load.

I don't know about specific locations in the 5th arrondissement, but you could check on www.pagesjaunes.fr (search for "laverie automatique")
