One more suggestion: If you are going somewhere that Rick Steeves covers in his guidebooks (and he doesn't cover everywhere), Rick frequently notes the presence of laundrettes and the availability of wash and fold service.
Personally, I like staying in apartments with washing machines and doing it myself (I'm a guy). Guys don't wash things out in the sink--if there is some machinery involved, then we're OK with it. But I've also had some laundry done by a wash and fold service. Haven't had to resort to a laundrette, but would not hesitate to do that as opposed to packing more clothes.
