Latvia?

Has anyone been to Latvia on holiday? Are there comfortable accommodations for travelers? What sort of economic conditions prevail? Thanks for any responses.

Been to Riga in late 80s and liked it alot. I can't advice on accomodations, but I would advice to travel during the May-September timeframe as it gets rainy during the fall/winter season.
The old town of Riga is relatively small, but is nice to walk through. Domski cathedral is not to be missed. Among the modern sites the Museam of Medicine is very interesting.
You can take a day trip to the resort town of Yurmala (30-40 mintes by train). They have a house of Latvian's famous poet Ryinis (sp?).

Hi Victoria,

My husband and I was in Riga early last October. We missed the tourist season by a few days. Apparently, they (tourism authorities) don't organise any excursion after September. We stayed a few days in Riga and walked around the city soaking in the architecture. We also visited the Museum (must see). There are lots of hotels there and are pretty safe and comfortable. We were told not to venture too far into the areas where the Russians live as it may be dangerous. Other than that it is ok. .The people are not that well off and are not very friendly. If you need further info, pls post here again as I hv some brochures with me. Yeah, citizens of certain countries need a visa for entry and it can be easily obtained at the airport like what I did.

Riga is an amazingly beautiful, historically-rich and cosmopolitan city. It just celebrated its 800th year:

see www.riga800.lv

I live in Riga and I wouldn't go so far as to say all of that....yes it's charming, but absolutely not-so-nice in the winter....ugh!

I had four great days in Riga last April. But I have not been to the rest of the country. The old city center in charming and the art nouveau part a definite must see. I walked a lot (also in "Russian parts") and never felt threatened in any way (I am a woman). There are all kinds of accomodations in Riga. I stayed in a five star Radisson SAS, but while there I noticed that with a same price (or less) I could have stayed in some atmospheric hotel in the old center. Check the www.inyourpocket.com somebody suggested. It has lots of Riga hotels with info on prices, quality etc.

I travelled through latvia in Winter 1993 then again in the following Summer.Even though it is cold beyond all my expectations, my Winter experience was much more special .Riga is a gorgeous city and any imperfections[?] are concealed by the beautiful cover of snow.I had the impression of walking through a postcard it is so pretty.I also found the people to quite helpful.Much renovation was taking place and i am sure when I return this October it will be a different experience, also as this time i will be travelling with my young child.
