Late-night arrival in Milan - what are my options?

I arrive in Milan around 11:30pm for a one-night stopover :( I want to stay in the city so I can spend the early morning seeing what little I can of the old town. Can I still get public transport into the city at that hour? (On a budget so can't afford cabs.)

Will I be able to find food in the city at that hour?

Thanks!

Where are you arriving from ? If long haul flight, won't you have been fed on the plane ? If short haul, I suggest you eat at your departure airport.

Thanks so much Steve, most helpful.

Caroline, just coming on a 2-hr flight from Istanbul so I will be able to eat beforehand...but then I wouldn't get to enjoy a meal in Italy would I! But really I definitely want to grab a bite and just see a little Milan nightlife, given that I have to spend the night there.

Any suggestions for where (neighborhood or specific eatery) I might find grub around 12:30 or 1am would be really helpful! By the way, although it probably doesn't help my chances of eating one bit: this will be a Sunday night!

thanks!

Late dining on a Sunday night? Forget it.

Can you take an earlier flight out of Istanbul?

suze Sep 17th, 2008 07:01 AM

I'm no expert on Milan but I'm guessing the fact that it's Sunday night will be more of a problem than the time of day, for what you propose to do.

caroline_edinburgh Sep 18th, 2008 03:12 AM

No, I think this is a mad idea. Does your flight actually get in at 2330 ? If so, even if you only have hand luggage, you won't be getting the bus until 0015/0025, depending on terminal, & you won't get into town until 0120. Even if you can find somewhere like a trendy bar open at that time on a Sunday night - and serving food - it's not going to be a great meal. Eat in Istanbul.

But if you are determined to try to eat in Milan, look at the list in Tripadvisor's Milan Nightlife section, then google on each establishment listed.

Where are you going the next day ?

P.S. I've just realised you are also the poster who's got such a lot of luggage you want to leave it at Istanbul airport while you visit that city for 3 days. What are you planning to do with it in Milan ? The airport left luggage office closes at 10.

Ciao,
NO chances to eat something in Milano in a restaurant at that time! Impossible.... You can find few bar, burger / kebab shops... nothing else.

Oh bummer! Yes the Sunday night thing is a huge obstacle I guess. Oh well. Yes I do get in at 11:30pm so yes you are correct, it was a mad plan! I don't think I can get an earlier flight, I'm on miles. (I'll definitely try for that when I get to Istanbul but I doubt it.) Thanks for setting me straight guys!

Good point Caroline, I had totally not thought about the luggage issue in Milan. That's really, really annoying their luggage office closes at 10pm! I had just assumed that if the Istanbul one is open all night the Milan one would be too. Grrrr! My plans are crashing down around me :).

Oh well, who needs another bowl of pasta, anyway!

cheers and thanks everyone! especially you, Gianni from Milan--I can't argue with that!

As I think I told you on another forum (TA), there will be eating options around central station even at midnight on a SUnday. No worries.

caroline_edinburgh Sep 19th, 2008 03:55 AM

But is it worth trailing into Milan for a kebab at 1.30 in the morning, with loads of luggage ? mp413 is leaving the next day - s/he hasn't said what time, where for & by what means, but I suspect it's a flight to the US.
