Last-minute search for La Scala pointless?

I know that tickets at La Scala are notoriously difficult to obtain, but I was wondering if I should try for a last minute single seat next week to the opera. Does La Scala do a re-sell of seats at the box office when people cancel the day of performance, etc? Is there any kind of procedure for this type of thing, or is it just an impossible endeavor?

According to the La Scala Web site, there are 13 tickets still available for Le Nozze di Figaro on February 7:

Try. Now and when you arrive in Milan and the day of each performance while you are in Milan. La Scala is a lovely theatre and a great place to attend an opera performance. We have often been able to get last minute tickets to sold out performances, once at La Scala and also elsewhere.

Wow you're right, I just checked this an hour ago (as well as last night) and so these 13 seats must have just been added -- thanks. These particular seats are way out of my budget, I can't spend more than 66 E. But I guess I'll keep checking until I have to leave Milan.

mamc -- thanks, I'll check everyday until I leave -- so you also suggest that I stop by the box office everyday while I'm in Milan as well? Is there a particular time (afternoon? evening) or should I just show up an hour before the performance begins?

There are only 2 tickets left for next week as of this morning -- $200 and $300 USD.

I've never been to La Scala. Is there standing room? A web search said that this was abolished in 2000 (before that, 200 standing room tickets). I can't find the info on La Scala's website.

However, the opera house just reopened last year (?). I'd call and find out. Standing room and last-minute tickets are quite common in many opera houses. It could be a very good deal.

I'm also looking into Teatro Comunale in Florence although it looks like there's only a concert next week, no operas. It's much cheaper, however. Does anyone have experience with this venue -- how are acoustics and seating?

ALWAYS try once you are there if you haven't had any luck before departure. You just never know. Ask around when you get to Milan. Your hotel may be able to help, though that would add cost.

I have been to the Firenze theatre -- nice seats, good accoustics, not terribly historic, not terribly "gob-smackingly amazing", if you know what I mean. The further back you sit, the greater the likelyhood of sitting with the blue-haired set (who all hum/sing aloud to their favorite arias and discuss them during the opera) and the clacque (hope I spelled that right) -- those poor individuals who have been given tickets for free in exchange for boisterous, enthusiastic clapping and BRAVOS/BRAVAS/BRAVIS at the end of every song. Get the best that you can afford. Trust me.

I got Ls Scala standing room seats the afternoon of the performance. There was a sort of mob scene when the line demolished itself. This was probably '98 or'99. Standing room was in the top deck, about 3/4 mile from the stage. Very tiring.

FWIW, I found there are always scalpers hanging around La Scala from as early as 9 AM. You can usually get same day tickets for top deck at 60 - 65E. The premium get cheaper as the day progresses.
