Last Minute Florence, S. Tuscany, & Rome

Hi All,

I had a previous thread and was all set in my plans until my boyfriend decides he wants to see ROME!!! We have 5 nights flying into Pisa. Can someone confirm if this is doable.

Day 1 - Pisa & Florence - night in florence
Day 2 - Florence & Siena (train) - night in siena
Day 3 - Siena & Montepulciano (Car rental from Siena) - night in Montepulciano area
Day 4 - Montepulciano: Val d'Orcia west - night in Montepulciano area
Day 5 - Car drop off and train to Rome
Day 6 - Rome

Where is the best place I can drop my car off around Montepulciano, if we want to get to Rome early on Day 5? Is this too much? Do we need to cut something out?

I apologize, but if my bf wants to see Rome I feel like I should let him. Thank you so much!

doable yes.

would I do it?

No.

As you say you have 5 nights. even that is a very short time to see just Rome let alone the rest.

I suggest Pisa-Florence 2 nights -Rome 3 nights OR

Pisa - rent car - Montepulciano 2 nights - Rome 3 nights.

if all he wants to see is the Colosseum, make it 2 nights in Rome.

Too rushed for me. You aren't giving yourself time in any of the cities. It's all travel.

Ya.. I just wanted to see Florence as I've been to Rome, but I know he'll regret not seeing Rome. I will still have my Tuscan countryside though!

Pisa rent car Montepulciano 3 nights and Rome 2 nights seems like the way to go. Do you think the best place to drop the car is Chiusa then train to Rome?

Definitely drop the car before you head into Rome if you can. It generally depends on when the car rental office is open in Chiusi or Orvieto.

Just a thought: If you really want to see Florence, why not spend another night in Florence and rent the car from there rather than Siena? Leaving Florence, you could drive a scenic route through the Chianti to the Montepulciano area. Just depends on how much you also want to see Siena as well. Up to you.

What time does your flight arrive? There is a bus from the Pisa airport to Siena, but only one per day (1pm I think)if you wanted to start there (spend the night?). There are a couple of places to pick up cars there and Montepulciano isn't that far (you can drive south one hour to Montalcino and then through Pienza for a quick stop before stopping in Montepulciano).

Now I'm really looking forward to your TR!

You could actually stay in Pisa and easily train to Florence and Siena*. Car to Montepulciano and Pienza. You lose at least 1/2 day changing hotels.

Hope you can fit in more Rome.

*We took a taxi from the Siena station to the center.

Pisa/Siena by train requires changing in Empoli and takes about 2 hours.

I think your plan to go straight to Montepulciano for 3 nights, then 2 nights in Rome, is a good one.

The Florence/Siena additions are just too much. The Val d'Orcia area is a lot of fun, gives you that countryside experience you're looking for and then you can give the bf Rome. Very nice plan.
