Large Demonstrations in Rome Sat 3/6. Americans advised to avoid the Cento Storico

Demonstrations Saturday, March 6th

The U.S. Embassy in Rome has been informed by police that there are two large demonstrations planned for this Saturday afternoon, March 6th, at approximately 3:00 PM in downtown Rome near Piazza Venezia.

A demonstration organized by the right-wing political parties in support of the liberation of Eric Priebke will take place in Piazza S. Apostoli behind Piazza Venezia. A counter-demonstration organized by Rifondazione Comunista and "No Global" elements may be held in nearby Piazza San Marco. Approximately 5,000 to 10,000 participants are anticipated.

Because of the proximity of the two events by groups having different political perspectives, the potential for violence is high. Americans are advised to avoid the "Centro Storico" (Historic Center) area of Piazza Venezia and the surroundings on Saturday afternoon.

It would certainly be the smart thing to do in avoiding this area of Rome for that day. A few years ago in Rome, I happened to be near a demonstration of a few thousand people protesting Berlusconi's policies. As the demonstrators marched on Via Ottaviano (near the Vatican), counter-demonstrators began throwing bottles and rocks, and another group was running up and down the street breaking store windows. Pretty scary since I had my wife and small child with me at the time and we were right in the middle of it! It happened very quickly and I noticed how fast the locals ducked into any nearby shop for cover.

I would imagine that visitors from *anywhere* would want to avoid this area on the day in question.

As well as locals not interested in participating in the demonstrations.

I woul just like to point out that this NOTHINg to do with the fact that Scotland is playing Italy at rugby in France this afternoon. Rugby fans are well-behaved.

At least they have their priorities straight

I need to clarify that (I've now had my coffee). They're not cancelld- the authorities have outlawed them. Whether or not that will keep them off the streets remains to be seen.
