Lapland - Driving in Winter

Our family is planning to spend Christmas in Lapland (Luosto area in Finland). We were originally tried to book our trip via a travel agency, but because their offering is limited and inflexible, we are considering booking our own travel plans, e.g. a la cart for each activities and transportations.

If we had a rented car, that would give us a lot of freedom and flexibility, but I am not sure if we (who are not experienced snow driver) could drive there. Do people rent a car from airport to drive to the hotel in winter (about 2 hour drive)? If so, must we get 4WD? Anything else you would suggest?
