Languedoc Roussillon (Saint-Siffret)
 

We are doing a home and vehicle exchange with a couple who have a house in Saint-Siffret near Nimes, France. We are interested in coastal drives and french cuisine especially sea food and french wines. We will be doing day trips and possibly a one night stay on the coast.
Any WW2 sites also would be of interest. Any advice would be appreciated.

The Camague is nearby. I liked Aiges-
and had seafood there. Sete, Beziers, Collioure
are coastal stops we enjoyed seafood. My favorite local wine I discovered in Sommieres is a white, Pic Poul, wonderful with oysters.

As in Aigue-Mortes? Nice town.

A few years ago, I spent the best vacation of my life in the area. I have a cousin who was working for a French bank in Bahrain at the time. One of his French co-workers owned a home in Lunel, in that area. He offered the home to my cousin for a month. My cousin called me from Bahrain, asking if my wife and I were interested in sharing the home with him. Two days later, we were on a plane to Montpellier, and then drove to Lunel. The town is a nice town, but what made it is the central location. From Lunel, we went to Nimes, Avignon, Arles, Montpellier, Pont Du Gard, and the nicest of all, Montelimar. There are many more places in that area which you can visit on a day trip and have a ball. Go for it!!

Thank you all for the information. How about the Pyrenees region, I was thinking that it might be a good place to spend a night.

How many days will you be staying near Nimes??? If it is anything less than 4 weeks, I would just visit stuff around where you're staying. The Pyrenees are too far away. There is enough things to see & do in Provence, Languedoc, and the Cote d'Azur to occupy your time for 3-4 months.

The Pyrénees are a long haul from the Languedoc. You've got plenty to keep you occupied there. Leave other regions for another trip.

St. Siffret is less than 5 mins from Uzes.
So... fantastic market on saturdays (arrive early - pre 8am - for ease of parking) and a brocante market/stalls on sundays. Bec A Vin is probably the best restaurant in town (Rue de l'Epée)
You're also 10 mins from the Pont du Gard - go over the hill from St.Sif down through St.Max and turn left at the bottom onto the D981.

As for WWII - the Château des Fouzes near Uzès was the site of a remarkable Franco-Polish-Spanish team breaking German Enigma communiqués and then using their own Enigma to resend the messages to London. In this there were being helped by a senior general in the Vichy French Defense Ministry. When Germany invaded Vichy France in operation Case Anton the team at Uzes had less than 48hours to get out and remove evidence. Some escaped to Spain and thence the UK, some were caught and perished in camps and a couple drowned when torpedoed in the Med. There's a monument to these brave men in Uzes cathedral.
