Lakes to Riviera to Tuscany - does this plan work?

Plan to fly to Milan, bus to Como, ferry to Bellagio for three nights. Then we would like to go to Santa Margherita on the Riviera for a couple nights and then head through the CT and on to Tuscany. Where should we rent the car? Can we train from Como to Santa Margherita and then get the car when we are ready to head for Tuscany or does it make more sense to rent the car in Como and drive from there? Also any recommendations for hotels in Santa Margherita would be appreciated.

Hi BeBe,

I would just get the car when you are ready for Tuscany. Pisa airport might be a good pick up location, easy location for the highway, or in the city if you want to stop off & see the Tower/Duomo. What towns do you plan on visiting?

PS: Public trans around Santa Margherita, Portofino & the Cinque Terre is great, easy & cheap. Don't bother with a car in the area!

If you plan to stay in SML, and for only 2 nites, I would get the car in Como and keep it thru Tuscany. Why mess with 3 trains and bags enroute. Also, you will want to drive to Portofino and Camogli, both close to SML. Drive to Monterosso the 3rd day--park it--and take the ferry boat to the CT. That coast is best seen from the water.

If you choose to train, get your car in La Spezia. Good luck !
