We did the Lake District and North Wales 10 years ago and found both to be lovely, with much to offer. Have things changed that much in Wales? I am also surprised because I found the people there to be friendly and helpful.

Poking fun at your neighbours isn't racism.
It's poking fun at your neighbours. |
It is racism. It isn't funny.
It may have been acceptable in the 1960s but it isn't now. You are a dinosaur. |
You may have visted Britain, you may have even lived in the South of Britain.
You know absolutely nothing about the shared culture and sense of humour of Wales, Liverpool, Manchester, Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland. So don't ever compare Northern banter to colour prejudice. |
Thank you fellow Fodorites for your thoughtful replies and recommendations. Based on what we've read along with some independent research, we've chosen the lakes!
Now, if I may pose another question...looking for a top notch hotel. We're not made of money but we will be saving up for a really nice and special place to stay. While gorgeous views are always a plus, we're thinking that the ability to step out and walk to restaurants and pubs would be really great, so leaning towards staying in a town somewhere. We're also looking for spacious accommodations with sitting area or outdoor space so that we can relax and enjoy some wine in the evenings. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again! |
Good decision! I'd recommend Bowness as having several excellent hotels in the town:
Old England Belsfield Windermere Hydro These three are in the town and walking to local restaurants, pubs etc is easy. The Old England is directly on the lake shore, while the Belsfield is across the road. The Hydro is a little way back from the water. |

It would help if you gave us an actual budget. How much do you want to pay per night?

If you visit Dove Cottage, you should stroll into the village and sample some Grasmere gingerbread.
Btw, is one allowed to mention the old saying about certain people praying on their knees on Sunday and preying on their neighbours the rest of the week? ;-) |
Hawkshead is a lovely village associated with Beatrix potter.

Quite a few years ago I stayed at the Sharrow Bay Hotel on Ullswater.
http://www.sharrowbay.co.uk Judging from the TA reviews it is still going strong. Not in a village, though. |
FD it is still one of the best hotels in The Lakes.
Rubicund and RMs suggestions are great, how much per night, do you want facilities like a Spa/pool etc? |
