Lake Maggorie in Sept

We are planning an anniversary trip to Italy in Sept. We will be there for 2 1/2 weeks during the latter part of the month. The last 2 nights will be spent at Ranco, Lake Maggorie. We fly out of Milan on Oct 2. Our anniversary is Oct.1, Sat. I have searched through several books and this site and have really not come up with much on this lake area. (We will be at Lake Como for 2 nights also.) I would like to suprise my husband on our anniversary with something really nice. We enjoy eating out and people watching.
This will really be our last night of Italy as well as our anniversary. Any good ideas out there? Thanks for your help.

I'm going at about the same time, and I've never been before (limited use, I know). I guess you're staying at Il Sole di Ranco, which I understand to be about the best restaurant on the lake. Looks like a super place for an anniversary dinner. If you're not, they are a member of Relais & Chateaux, whose web site is excellent (www.relaischateaux.fr).

I think you'll get info on places on the "wrong" side of the lake. The other restaurant which I fancy is called Del Lago in Cannobio. All I could find was a list put out by the owners of a language school saying it was one of the ten best places to eat they had come across. I phoned for rooms - really cheap, but only showers, which I don't like. No web site! I doubt it will have the cool elegance of Il Sole, but it MAY combine really fine food with a view of the passing world. I hope you get an informed response for me to read!

I have booked into Villa Crespi on Lake Orta on the strength of a post here. They are syndicated on a couple of web sites - http://www.lagodortahotels.com and http://www.slh.com. Something completely different! Another post said that the drive from Maggiore over the top of Motterone to Orta is quite something (take the autostrada home, I think). Too far for you, and wrong side of the lake, perhaps. Also, my guess would be that you will only see hotel guests in the restaurant.

Now let's hope you get posts from someone who's actually been.

Mike, Just wanted you to be aware that while the Villa Crespi is a lovely property, it is not in the village of Orta San Guilio. If you stay there and want to spend evenings in the village, dining and people watching, there is quite a steep hike back to the Villa. If this is not your intention, the Villa Crespi had a lovely looking dining room and menu, and you could just remain there. Have you looked at www.hotelsanrocco.it ? This is a very nice hotel right down on the lake with a view of the island and walking distance to shops and restaurants.

Mike,
Thanks so much for your response. Although we didn't get much info I feel sure that we will have a great time.
Cheryl, I have no idea what you mean by "ttt" but my guess is that it's just as well that I am almost computer illiterate.

TTT just means to the top. I am also interested in your question and it was getting quite far down--and I must admit I'm in the race for the most computer illiterate--I still firmly believe the scanner is a paperwieght. We will also be in the area in Sept.

Jan,

I would certainly suggest dinner at Il Sole di Ranco for your anniversary. A friend of mine, who shares my love of fabulous hotels and restaurants, just returned and recommends it VERY highly. I wouldn't hesitate...
