Lake Maggiore late July

Hi All,
I would like some advice please! I will be playing at the World Masters Games in Turin in August 2013 and have a few days to spare before they begin. I would like to visit Lake Maggiore although I know it will be a very busy period. Does anyone have a preference for towns along the lake? We plan to catch the bus from Malpensa. Any further help regarding accommodation would also be appreciated :)

Cheers, Ozlinz

We liked Stresa since it is a large enough town to have a good selection of hotels and restaurants = and easy access to the charming Borromean Islands in the lake. Wonderful for a couple of days relaxation.

Stresa, for sure.

I would like to join the above posters in rec. Stresa and add a rec. for the Hotel La Palma.

I was in Stresa last summer, for about a week in late June. It's a nice little town, although the lakeside feels a bit touristy with lots of hotels.

Going out to the small islands for a few hours was fun, but they are also a bit touristy. The cablecar was nice, but the small "skilift"-sized thing going further up scared me so much I walked that bit back down to the cablecar.

It's only about an hour by train to Milan, if you get bored by the quiet.

If you're going in July, make certain your hotel has decent air conditioning.

Thanks for your overwhelming recommendation for Stresa...I look forward to planning my time there!
